Slightly ironic in Lintott's case, given that the wildcards go in at the bottom £30k bracket. I'm pretty sure that if Lintott had been happy to accept £30k originally, we'd have retained him over Weatherley. But fair enough that he tried to get more - because he really should have drafted by someone.
Other players include De Lange, Bracey, Cockbain, Cullen, Klaassen, Leaning, Zaib and Worrall. And there will always be players like Pepper last year, and Lintott the year before, who come out of nowhere to star in the Blast. But Lintott and Parkinson really are the standout names.
A grand total of 14 runs scored today between Organ, Holland and Weatherley. Whichever two we decide to open with next week, I'm not sure it'll be much different to previous seasons. I just hope that we revert back to just the two of them, rather than all three. If we need someone to cover for Dawson next week (if he doesn't recover from injury in time), I'd rather it was Prest. (And that's nothing to do with the fact that he got the second highest score for us today.)
It's a shame that Haines has signed a new contract at Sussex, he'd have been one to try to poach using the Ben Brown connection, assuming they're still on decent terms of course. Ali Orr at Sussex is another opener we can try to target in future, we've really got to try to get another top 3 batter sorted sooner rather than later. I think most fans agree that there's only room for 1 of Organ or Weatherley (to go alongside Holland) if we want to be top title contenders but no doubt they'll play all 3 of them and we'll find ourselves 30-3 or something similar on day 1 vs Notts. Prest deserves a shot certainly, he couldn't do any worse! I suppose the management would argue that we've got the likes of Prest, Albert and Middleton waiting in the wings who have shown good form in other comps, but it looks such a better side, in my opinion, with a good solid county pro opener in there. I like Holland as he does contribute reasonably often with the bat (not big scores but solid knocks) and is so valuable with the ball breaking annoying partnerships and a safe pair of hands in the field.
I've got no interest in the IPL itself, but I am interested to see how well the new substitution rule (or "impact player") goes down. It's something I could see being adopted in other competitions in the future if it works well. As far as I can tell, there are only very limited exceptions on when it can't be used. You can pretty much make the substitution at any stage of that match, and regardless of whether the player being substituted has already contributed to the match (eg you can sub-out a bowler who has used his four-over allocation, and bring in a new bowler with a fresh new four-over allocation). It basically turns it into a 12-a-side match, but with only 11 allowed to bat each innings, and only 11 allowed to field at any one time.
The main limitation in the IPL is that unless you don't select the maximum of 4 overseas players in your line up, the sub has to be an Indian player.
I'd expect most teams will add an extra batter/bowler depending on whether they're batting or bowling. Then swap said player for the opposite in the run chase. Especially as you don't have to name your team until after the toss now.
Which is fair enough. From four overseas and seven Indians per playing 11, to four overseas and eight Indians per playing 12. And it's not like India is short of talent depth in t20 cricket. A split of five overseas to seven Indians would arguably be too overseas-heavy. A lot of competitions don't even allow as many as four overseas.
Only 5 points for a draw this year in the CC which suits us I think as we only drew once last season and Surrey drew 5 times. That would be 15 less points for them and 3 less for us.
Also bonus points for runs start from 250 and 450 is needed inside 110 overs for full batting points. That may NOT suit us!
Dawson in the squad for tomorrow so we're at full strength. I fully expect Holland to play as his medium pace can come in useful as a 4th seamer (although there is Fuller as well). So for me, the only question is does Prest get his chance instead of either Weatherley or Organ? Hopefully yes IMO but I'm not expecting it TBH.
