https://www.efl.com/news/2020/december/max-aarons-named-efl-young-player-of-the-month-for-november/ Max Aarons award. Well deserved
It's amazing how much an ever present player Max has become, having not missed a minute this season, especially when so many players have been injured. He may be 20, but he's also a very experienced player now.
Yeah I think there is a lot to be said for playing players when young to get experience, not just 5 mins at the end of a game. Suppose that's why Adams has his role of loans specialist
He has been trusted by his manager thus producing confidence. His natural ability has been enhanced by this and a obviously sensible training regime. We do it the right way nowadays. Long may it continue. OTBC.
Great to see Josh Martin have a great start to his career as well. I hope he improves further and does a ‘Max’
"If you compare this season to the one when we went up, we conceded a lot of goals but were scoring a lot of goals as well. This time we’ve had a lot of 1-0 victories. If you want to compete at this level you need to be secure at the back." (Teemu Pukki) Now where have I heard that before ..........
Yes, he's been improving game after game and looks like a much more mature player. This is a positive side of the injuries to Hernandez and Cantwell, as Martin has got the game time he needs to develop as a player.
Same applies to Sørensen. He hasn't just grown into the LB position over recent games but is more keyed in to our style of play than the experienced Quintilla.
Do you really think so? I’d love to see Sorensen in his natural position because he’s great going forward with the ball at his feet, but I really think Quintilla was very strong defensively and what he lacked going forward he made up with due to his set piece delivery (first time in a long time I have felt like we are a threat at corners - that’s now disappeared without Quintilla). Admittedly it made our attacks very right-side heavy, but I thought that was working fine.
We can actually afford to rest Skipp, which would have been unthinkable only a few weeks ago. Rupp, courtesy of his injury layoff, has had a good break, but Skipp has been ever present.
I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought Sørensen should be preferred at LB over Quintilla. Just that, like Martin, he has benefitted from a team mate's misfortune, with game time he would otherwise not have got, even though out of position. Also, agree about Quintilla's set-piece delivery. But that same ability makes crossing from wide a temptation, and I think Quintilla tended to overdo it; that's where I think Sørensen fits better into our attacking play.
IMO Skipp being ever-present is one of the main reasons for our much improved defensive record. Why "rest" him if there's no reason to?
I agree with Robbie that Sørensen has grown into his emergency LB role, but it should also help him to make the adjustment to the holding midfielder role DF want him to play. Though Skipp generally played well last night, he also gave the ball away several times when not under pressure. At 19, there must be a tremendous load on him playing twice a week in such pressurised games. Now that McLean and Rupp are coming available again we should be able to rotate players like DF has done in other positions.
I don't really get the constant desire for tinkering. There's usually someone calling for 3 at the back and 2 strikers etc. Sorensen is part of the team on an incredibly run of results. If Bryam returns to the squad soon he will need to work hard to displace Sorensen now. Godfrey was a holding midfielder eyebrows were raised when Farke used him as a centre back and he never played midfielder again. Unless we have more injuries I'm expecting an unchanged team on Wednesday.
Yes, why "rest" a player if there's no reason to do so? That said, "reason" doesn't have to be an injury. The condition monitoring done nowadays can identify potential problems such as risk of muscle injury before anything actually happens. But if everything is fine, who needs "a rest"?
