Cook probably wouldn't have put him in there if it wasn't for Jimmy getting injured.

England have added two pace bowlers to their 14-man squad for the fourth Test against Australia starting at Trent Bridge on Thursday as possible replacements for the injured James Anderson.
Liam Plunkett and uncapped Mark Footitt were called up after Anderson sustained a side injury during England's victory at Edgbaston which put them 2-1 ahead in the five-match Ashes series.

"With James Anderson missing this test through injury and some concerns over Mark Wood's workload in the build-up to the last test we felt that bringing in two extra bowlers in Liam Plunkett and Mark Footitt was necessary," national selector James Whitaker said in a statement on Saturday.

"The reports on Wood are positive at this stage and we are hopeful he'll be available for selection on Thursday."

Plunkett has played 13 tests, most recently against India last July, but Derbyshire left-armer Footitt is uncapped at international level.

England squad: Alastair Cook (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Mark Footitt, Adam Lyth, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Mark Wood.

    OUR VIEW

The call up for Footitt is an exciting one given the variety that the Derbyshire left-armer can provide for the England pace attack. It is highly unlikely that his inclusion is for anything more than simply gaining some experience being around the set up on this occasion with Wood expected to regain his place in the team after having played the first two Tests in the series, but that will be valuable nonetheless. Plunkett's pace and aggression provides another option for England, but it would be a surprise if Wood is not the man to replace Anderson at Trent Bridge.

Was thinking it would be Wood as the post above suggests. If, as is expected Jimmy is not available for the Oval, and we win at Trent Bridge I would expect that they might try the young lad from Derbyshire there.

Shame that Rushworth has not been given the opportunity, but I think he is seen as to old to have a long term test career and his chance has gone. Nice lad always down to earth the few times he gets to play for us at Washington Cricket Club, but I don't think even he was expecting a call up despite some of the press talk. Mind you that would have been a coup having a Test player on your local Cricket Clubs books!

Well it would (or Wood as a desperate pun.)
Wood to get the job by the look. Nailed on (ffs getting worse me like <doh>)

Don`t know anything about Footitt. Seems like one for the future.

Lyth still in there. Needs to do something this time. Very little contribution up to now. Could bring another bowler in and move everybody up a place for the difference he`s made.

    Priorities in order then.

The selectors have a habit of giving newcomers a full series. I suppose the reason is to relieve some of the pressure. It might be a good idea but for the ashes series? Not for me. It`s a bit too special for that.

Ours forgot to replace my beloved Haddin, I can see your logic although if you were down 3-0 would they blood new talent? England positives - Joe Root, Finn <wah> Edgbaston <applause> Camaraderie!
