Ahh if Europe game are to be mentioned 6-2 V partisan Belgrade was enjoyable after recovering from 2-1 down if I remember right, infact I can remember 5 visits in a row to Highbury back then without seeng us defeated
Those European nights at Loftus Road were special and I feel privileged to have witnessed them. Didn't we start the campaign by putting 7 past Bran Bergen or is my memory playing tricks on me?
Something like that and Stanley broke Denis Law's European goal scoring record for a single season. Off course nowadays it's all about the overpaid over hyped special ones who play 16 or 18 European ties a season, whereas in that season we played 8 ties in total........fecking AEK.......3 up from the first leg and lose 3-0 over there and out on penalties......should have won the UEFA Cup that season when the competition actually meant something, not like today's diluted version..........God I'm sounding grumpy today
Meandering again back to those European nights, we played Cologne off the park at HQ and they were fortunate to only lose 3-0. I went over to Cologne for the return leg and they wiped the floor with us despite us going 4-0 up on aggregate in the first couple of minutes.....in the end we went through on away goals, Parkes played a blinder and dear old Dave Clement was sent off before HT...... Belting good away trip though......
Just to throw another memory into the mix...... First time we ever beat Chelsea, a 1-0 win in 3rd (?) round replay, kicked off at 1:30 on a mid week day due to the power strikes during winter of discontent. Almost 30000 in HQ which was quiet amazing, we were allowed out of school at lunchtime and supposed to go home as the teachers didn't want us leaving school at the same time as the crowds would have been leaving the ground but instead legged it to HQ and got in just before kick off.........think Stanley scored that day too....... That started a period when we beat them more often than we lost and we established ourselves as top London side for many years......
Worst ever for me? Donny away FA Cup 3rd round. M1 covered in snow, almost crashed twice, arrived late lost 1-0!!
Vauxhall Motors loss was a major low and still embarrassing to think it happened. Best memory was the 5 seconds that I thought Crouch's header had put us ahead against Arsenal. I snapped out of it as Arsenal went 1 up straight away.
Best? Easy, Liverpool away League Cup semi final second leg March '86. 2-2. They scored all 4!!!!!!! Went on the directors coach from LR. Absolutely wasted by the time we got back!!
Didn't we thump Cologne too? I would give a lot to have another season in Europe, even the Europa League of Nothing. Great nights. Best - Clive Allen's knee. Worst - Tony Currie's tackle.
