I seldom follow links on MB's but did so this time. The link seems to show the addresses some businesses on Hessle Road use, oddly the attached map itself omits the word 'High', as does every street sign along the length of Hessle Road, in both Hull and the East Riding. Can you provide a modern picture of an actual street sign in Hull, or the ER, that states Hessle High Road? The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
What are posters thoughts on new potato chips? Personally ****ing hate them. In fact I wont eat them. Awful things. They're the wasp version of fried potatoes. Does anyone like them?
It would seem over time on maps, probably for modernisation the high on maps has been dropped. That goes for Anlaby high road which on modern maps also seems to have been omitted. When I lived in that area street signs had Hessle high road on them, and as you see most business addresses quoted in that area still refer to it as Hessle and Anlaby High Roads. However I do know that even the council sending out correspondence to addresses in this area address them Hessle high road. It is probably an age thing, over time the City is just referred to and in many cases and advertised as Hull, whereas in my younger days many always referred to it as KIngston upon Hull when asked where they were from. Maybe Assam Allam is in charge of mapping, and shortening the names as it is more marketable
My missus lived on the corner of Hessle High Road and First Lane for several years, her address was Hessle High Road, at some point after she moved, its name was changed to Hull Road, Hessle.
Bloody Hell - that chippy brings back happy ancient memories. Not sure it was called A & M when I first started going there in maybe '58 or '59, but a whole bunch of us from school used to use our 1 bob dinner money to buy 5 park Drive or 5 Woodbines, and used the leftover thruppence to buy a bag of chips and piss off into Pickering park to scoff 'em and smoke. My mate still lives right opposite the chippy near the intersection. His address is Hull Rd, Hessle, but as yourself & others have mentioned it was Hessle High road way back then.
I've never actually known where Gypsyville is. I've seen it written on buses but I've never heard anyone say that they're from there.
