Sad but no shock at all. He was a chain smoker even when he played.

Taken a turn for the worst, poor man.

    Good luck to him.

Him and bergkamp are my 2 favourite duch players,
That goal and bergkamp's in the World Cup where
The ball come over his shoulder and after one
Touch he slots it in the net.. Beautiful

Cruyff was my generation's cool footie superstar and in the absence of England at the 1974 World Cup Finals I was cheering Holland on. Cruyff's sublime skills and Neeskins and Johnny Rep are forever in my memories. I sincerely wish him all the best.

He was such a smooth footballer.
He just seemed to glide around the pitch

Nice touch that fans across the country clapping on the 14th minute

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/oct/26/johan-cruyff-salutes-tributes

It is not so much his failing health but the current state of Netherlands football that is leaving Johan Cruyff dejected. In his first Dutch newspaper column since news broke that he is battling lung cancer, Cruyff wrote that the outpouring of tributes that had followed were “emotional and heart-warming”.

At football grounds across the country fans gave standing ovations in the 14th minute of matches over the weekend in tribute to Cruyff, who rose to fame in the No14 shirt at Ajax. “I’m very proud of the appreciation demonstrated by all the reactions,” he wrote in De Telegraaf on Monday. The former Ajax and Barcelona forward gave no new details of his illness, saying he is still undergoing tests to determine the type of lung cancer he is suffering from.

After three paragraphs, his column reverted to its usual theme: dispensing wisdom about football around the world, and in particular in the Netherlands. He lamented poor performances by Dutch teams, including his beloved Ajax, in Europe last week, saying tactical errors had cost the clubs.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar lost in the Europa League while Groningen salvaged a draw, and PSV Eindhoven were defeated 2-0 at Wolfsburg in the Champions League. Those results followed the elimination this month of the national team from Euro 2016 qualifying.

Cruyff’s said Dutch players ran too much with the ball and not enough without it, overcrowded penalty areas for corners and should leave a gap in defensive walls so the goalkeeper can see through when a free-kick is taken. “All details that keep getting forgotten,” he wrote. “It’s enough to make you dejected.”

A superb player, one of the very best. Best European footballer after Zidane IMO. (And Zidane isn't really fully European either)

Sadly, French people are definitely considered fully European.

As both his parents are Algerian, I find it a bit difficult to call him 'fully' European.
