Eight per cent of football fans claim they would stop watching their team if it contained a gay player, according to a survey carried out by a research company on behalf of BBC Radio 5 live.

The majority of football fans in Great Britain – 82 per cent of 4,000 people surveyed online - would have no issue with an openly gay player at their club.

Surprisingly high number of people still living in the dark ages.

Sounds a high number to me for an extreme reaction.

Don't believe for a second they actually would.

People seem to throw that "I'd stop going" line around like it's nothing sometimes. Like those nutters on here who said they'd stop going if AP was involved again.

Still a stupid thing to say of course.

More fool them then for caring that much about a player's personal relationships.

I wonder how many players share similar sentiments. For example, the old 'I wouldn't want to share a changing room with a faggot in case he tries to **** me' bollocks.

Surveys don't ask everyone just a cross-section which is supposed to be representative. This is handy as if it doesn't fit in with someone's views they can say is bollocks as they only asked so many people and if it does fit in with their views they can say it is overwhelming proof their views are right and everyone agrees with them.

I think opposition to all these things is exaggerated. Most people won't know a gay person, and some might say these things, but would they really have a problem with someone they met if it turned out their were gay? I think the vast, vast majority of people are fine with it.

I think the BBC sometimes get a bit obsessed with these things. Every week or so at the moment there's a new analysis on this gay footballers thing. They used to go on about black managers constantly. Maybe at some point it'll be that there's not enough black goalkeepers. For some reason you don't see many of those do you?

What a load of rubbish. Who cares ? Who's bothered ? Someone somewhere is intent on smearing football with any old tosh they can. First it was all about hooligans, then racism, not enough black managers etc etc, then some more old tosh about football being riddled with racism ( news to me) now its homophobia.
    You know what ?

They will be having a programme about the white population of England being 91% and therefore under represented in many PL teams and the national team so there is a need for a quota system. There again, maybe they won't.

It's a survey, not a made up story.

There isn't a single known gay footballer playing in England. Obviously some players will be gay, but feel they feel the need to hide the fact.

So there is an issue with gay footballers, they have to pretend to be straight and pretending there is no issue, prevents that from ever changing.

There is a problem with homophobia in football. I've heard it in the stands. Robbie Rogers felt the need to retire and come out only AFTER leaving Leeds. I won't even talk about Fashanu.

I don't think it is an issue with fans as such. They would target an opposition player just as they do for a variety of reasons, over weight, ginger etc...whilst not mentioning the same things with their own players.

I'm talking about the homophobic chants directed at Brighton fans and players. Those sort of chants are no different than racist chants directed at Bradford or Leicester like 'You're just a town full of Pakis'.
