Would be a heck of a gamble from Vettel, Ferrari look to be on the rise and their one driver policy suits a WDC push. Mercedes could be declining and their driver policy is a mess of rules and contradictions .
Does he have an emotional tie though? I think he'll race at wherever he thinks will give him the best chance of winning another WDC, or the biggest pay packet, or does that equal an emotional tie? At the moment, both of the above criteria seems to be with Ferrari if they carry their form through the rest of the year, so I'd be surprised if he had decided to move on for 2018 this early in the season. I think he'll wait until summer and see if Ferrari still have the edge.
I will be stunned if he moves. RBR-Ferrari was in the books for a few years. But this... would be unprecedented.
Can't see it myself, Merc could have put Alonso in that seat but chose not to because of the driver balance, control, dynamic..... Vettel would be no different and Mercs payroll would bankrupt a small country. As much as I would love to see it, I think we are better served with the best drivers in differing but equally competitive teams.
I think he will stay as well. He has a clear no.1 position (even if not official he is easily the quicker of him and Kimi) and Ferrari do seem to be genuinely on the up and not just another false dawn.
From what I've seen of the rumours they all say that these talks happened before pre-season testing. Seb is as shocked as the rest of us at performance and will almost certainly back out of any agreements made then.
Alonso to leave Mclaren for another team mid-season. Will replace Palmer. Glock to replace Palmer at Renault after a recent seat fitting.
I think that'll be another mistake. They're a works team, yes, but they're not on the level of their customer team, let alone the grid leaders, they've had 2 or 3 years more engine development than Honda, but it's still way off the Ferrari & Merc.
he'll go there just as Honda get their act together and Renault decide for the umpteenth time that they wanna quit F1. For all his skills it has to be said that Alonso contract timing management isn't one of them.
The deadline for notifying the FIA of an intention to change engine supplier for 2018 has past, without Mclaren or anyone else saying anything. So Mclaren-Honda continues into 2018.
mclaren dont have much choice really. Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault are out of the question for the long term plan of the team. I wonder if Alonso will be in a similar situation. I also have a feeling if Button wanted to come back, Alonso stays and Vandoorne doesnt improve then Stoffel may end up at Sauber.
I think Vandoorne is very safe. Alonso i think will go to Renault or to Indy and Button has had quite enough of his time wasted by Honda already. McLaren will probably end up running two young drivers or Vandoorne + a B lister. Grosjean maybe? Not that it really matters who's in the backmarker cars.
Depends if nobody wants to go and they have to pay 4,5,6 million to get a B lister? Might as well excercise their option on Button, they are paying him anyway.
