It originally opened as an athletics track if my memory serves, Cricket and rugby was also played on there. Dog racing, amongst other dubious sports of the pugilistic type.
.....and......the most played recording at Stamford Bridge over the last 140 years? Maybe, The Harry J All Stars - "The Liquidator" because it pre-dates "Blue is the Colour" by 3 years.....
Yes it did it was originally owned by the same property magnet who wanted to sell it on as a money earner.....incidently he bribed the authorities to aledgeley keep Arsenal in the top league.
Not so CP. I reckon they were Woolwich Arsenal at the time, The bribe was to help them relocate and still keep their status. Remember there is no place called Arsenal, only a team. Can you name any other Teams that are not associated with a town/city/village/place name? there are a few.
Off the cuff no. Were they actually called Woolwich Arsenal or the Arsenal? My grandfather played for them as a junior before they crossed the river. He broke his leg, and while recuperating ( no Club insurance or pay in those days) he took a job on a ship called the SS Packier ,round trip to Fremantle WA. After a horrendous storm between South Africa and west Oz, he swore if he got off, he'd never get back on another ship. He did get off, and never left Australia again. So, going back many years , he only ever referred to The Arsenal, not Woolwich Arsenal. In any event, that bribe seems to have worked. Oh and the Teams, In 1971 I played for a team called Toad Hall United on Chiswick Green. Just saying.
Current football teams whose names are not associated to a specific town/city/village. Port Vale Arsenal Crystal Palace. In 1893 Woolwich Arsenal registered with the football league.
