http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport...rland-s-jermain-defoe-1-7934199#ixzz49nemyRM6 He mentions about Jermain pissing off to America and the fact they've been building the squad for the last 2 years, which I get. However, he then goes on to say... “We have put our eggs into their basket. I saw no reason why I should break one of those eggs and take a fresh egg into the basket, especially as we’re talking about a player who’s well over 30 years of age and has a certain style of play. “We’re really looking forwards to the people who are more akin to (Jamie) Vardy and (Wayne) Rooney himself and Sturridge (and) Rashford. “That’s what we’re looking for, rather than the player who’s very good in the penalty box as a finisher.” Clearly he's barely watched Defoe this season. He's played the lone striker really well, there is a lot more to his game than just finishing in the penalty box - that's a description of Darren Bent. Admittedly he's never going to bully defenders or play little knock-downs for the midfield to run onto, but neither are any of the others mentioned with the possible exception of Rooney. His logic is flawed. In my (perhaps biased) opinion, he should 100% be going ahead of Sturridge (crock) and Rashford (inexperienced).
Can't ****ing stand the England team & hope they get knocked out in the group stage. Had no time for them since 2004. Couldn't give a flying fanny.
Defoe is an old man. We need him fresh for the new season. Could be the last we get out of him. Not sure why people are so pissed off that he isn't going to be part of that train wreck.
Excellent posts. Bollocks to England. We need Defoe rested before the start of the new season. England wouldn't even play SKP the year the year he scored 30 goals and won the European Golden Boot, so **** them.
I don't actually want Defoe to go as I'd rather he focused on us but it does feel like we could have the top eleven English players at Sunderland and it would be twelve through twenty two that would start for England.
Didn't realise Defoe turns 34 at the start of next season. How long is this "80k" contract he's supposedly on?
Bitter Sweet - Would have loved him to go, he deserves it IMO. One of a few form strikers and has International experience, ideal sub role. On the other hand a good rest for him in the summer, come back and prove Hodgson wrong - Golden Boot next year lol..
It's all about taking your best form players...1 - 0 15 mins to go and looking for a goal....the guy is a machine in front of goal.....another poor choice by an England manager....like Billy said earlier....I haven't given a crap about England since 1966....lol
Hodgson is a floundering muppet, but I'm glad he's put this one to bed. We could do without the distraction. What's the odds on Sturridge being a crock for this tournament..... and for good?
Could seem a long summer. As Disco points out, he's nearly 34. Its maybe a blessing that he is not playing in the muppet show.
i think he could maybe should have gone but on the other hand England need to look to the future. Quite pleased he didn't get picked so he can have a good break as he has had a hard season doing a job that he wasn't used to doing. roll on next season with a fresh Defoe.
Aren't you supposed to have different 'options' available for when the **** you're trying ain't working
Exactly like Andy Carroll. I'd never argue that he should not be included, he's got something none of the others have got and I'm not talking about his ponytail. I'm waiting for the 'Defoe would have scored that' comments to start, every time a striker doesn't bury a chance.
