Mixed feelings on this one, you watch RG get crocked now. AM never really had a good run so we never had the opportunity to see how good he was. He didn't impress when he had his chance but letting in 60+ goals last term wasn't our keepers' fault. As for Rob Green well, always a howler lurking inside him!.
Green is going nowhere as you say. McCarthy may do, big shame we never gave him a few games to see what he could do.
I am quite gutted about this one. Although I had the same feeling when Lee Camp went although I think McCarthy will get to the top. Now it's done we probably need to sign Green to a new contract (although that would be next Summer when we can reduce the terms).
Couldn't agree more, a wasted investment imo & we'll never know what could have happened if the money had been used elsewhere last season i.e. on a RB/LB etc
I don't think it's anyone at the club's fault. We didn't want to let McCarthy go but Palace have triggered a release clause and he wasn't given a proper chance last season because Green was playing well.
Have to echo this. Shame really, I know he had a desire to play but this surely must be Green's last season so next season the No.1 Jersey would have been his. (Even sooner had Greens performances not been up to scratch.) I just hope for our sake that 1: Green doesn't get injured/purchased and 2: That his form doesn't drop as he now has no real competition for his place.
This doesn't look too clever if there's truth in it: Championship club Queens Park Rangers are worried that goalkeeper Robert Green could soon be on his way out of Loftus Road amid interest from the Premier League. According to Get West London, sources close to the recently relegated club have said that there is genuine concern that Green could leave the Hoops, leaving them without a recognised stopper. Reserve goalkeeper Alex McCarthy left to join Crystal Palace earlier in the week in a deal worth £3 million and Green could be next. Should the former England goalkeeper depart it would mean that rookie stopper Joe Lumley would be the only custodian on the books at Loftus Road. Green was in superb form last season and despite the R’s relegation his personal form earned him a return to the England squad towards the back end of the season, for the first time since the ill-fated 2012 World Cup. R’s boss Chris Ramsey is naturally concerned about Green’s future but hopes the player will stay. He said to Get West London: “If I am at another club, I am trying to get Rob because he is fantastic and trains like someone in his twenties. Other clubs should be trying to poach him, but I hope they don’t.”
It really wouldn't be the end of the world IMO. Plenty of decent keepers available on loan potentially or to buy for not crazy money- Bentley at Southend for example. That article looks like a lot of hot air anyway.
This, this and this!! We should buy him with the AM money and loan him back if needs be with a recall clause.
He said to Get West London: “If I am at another club, I am trying to get Rob because he is fantastic and trains like someone in his twenties. Other clubs should be trying to poach him, but I hope they don’t.” IMO, This sounds like he does not agree with the sale, maybe a bit put out?
Flanman, did we make a profit on McCarthy? How much did we pay Reading for him? Also, Rambo said last night that we got £8m out of the Sterling deal. I thought 20% of £49m is £9.8m?
Undisclosed fee according to wiki...... Perhaps Liverpool are holding back some retention money........
That actually looks like an underhand "come and get him" for Green. It might be that his wages are too high to allow other targets to come in (if there's an overall wage budget) or that CR wants to finish the rebuilding before aany uncertainty over Green happens next Summer. We'd have about 4-5 million for a new keeper (estimatedon the two outbound keepers) so even overspending a bit on a replacement to ensure we got him wouldn't be the end of the world.
If Green does part company, we would need time for the new keeper to gel with his defence, so wee should getting someone in ASAP.
