Hernandez: 6 from 7; conversion rate = 85.714% Maloney: 11/13; conversion rate = 84.615% Some people are ruled by statistics Other people are ruled by a combination of brain and heart after taking into account statistics
Quick question - if Maloney took our next one, and missed, what would be your response? I'm off, so don't expect another reply.
Hernandez wasn't in the squad against Accrington He scored against Manchester City with a well taken penalty - although I don't approve of players side footing to the left if they are left footed because they alert the goalkeeper to the direction earlier than if they hit it to the right
It depends on how good the shot was. If he tapped it at the middle of the goal so the goalkeeper could clear it with his legs I would be concerned. If it was a sensibly taken penalty and the goalkeeper produced a fantastic save I'd want Maloney to take the next one. It's not difficult to understand.
So in 15 years of being a pro Msaloneys only taken 13 pens. This tells you he isnt a a regular pen taker. Whcih tells you he doesnt fancy it. Give it a rest Peter
There appears to be still people who don't understand how I would decide the best player to take a penalty. I would look at a persons record. I wouldn't blindly calculate conversion rate and decide on that basis. If no player had taken a lot of penalties, say under 15, I would look at each penalty and assess their technique. I would consider the players footballing understanding and skill. I would consider how they think about taking a penalty. If they obviously consider the best way to score from a penalty they would be more likely to be chosen than somebody who doesn't seem to think about things too much. I don't think somebody who taps the ball near the centre of the goal would get my vote. Exceptions would be players who wait until the goalkeeper commits themselves and then hit the ball into the other side of the goal.
I think it's unwise to look at all his 15 pro years. I am more interested in what he's done recently. He's scored with all four penalties he's taken in 2015. The last time he missed a penalty was in 2008 before Hernandez even arrived in Europe.
I can't believe this bollocks is still going on. Hernandez is our penalty taker, until yesterday he had a 100% record, I'm quite happy for him to remain our penalty taker.
It will be interesting to see what Bruce thinks next time. Obviously it will depend who is on the pitch.
I think I understand your philosophy: Does it matter if you mess up a very good chance to score a goal? The most it can cost you is two points and get you relegated or not promoted. It's not the end of the world.
I might audit how many times penalty has been been used in this thread, or I may go and stick pins in my scrotum. I'm undecided at the moment.
Just saw his penalty miss for the first time, he looked confident enough with it. Maloney would probably do a good job too so at least we have options according to whose on the pitch.
I'm just listening to an argument about whether teams should play the ball out from the back - I think they mean via the midfield rather than kicking it straight up to the strikers. Graham Sounness makes the point that it depends on the quality of players. I don't think there's much argument about playing via the midfield but Hull City seem the only team who have been doing it slowly - other teams have been doing it quickly. Maybe now we have Diame and Maloney playing we will get it forward quicker. (For Mr. Shoes: penalty)
