I thought the proposed redesigned road needed some of that area? There'll at least be some engineering issues for that land during the road build won't there?

Any development like this has to be good for the City.

    RIP Earl De Grey.

That's true but should be at least double the size and include the ice hockey

The building will go but there's no reason why the name should.

Best Western (or whoever it is) Earl de Grey......

Although its a great idea. It needs to be 10, 000+ to compete with Leeds and Sheffield.

Isn't Ice Arena around the same capacity?

I walked passed Earl De Grey yesterday for the first time in years, and it looked a sorry sight.

    I prefer smaller venues anyway.

Smaller venues are fine.........We already have those so it's pointless in building another one at a similar size.
What the city needs is something to compete with Leeds/Newcastle/Sheffield/Manchester arenas.
Something that will bring in bands/acts worth taking notice of nationally.

How big are the various O2 venues that seem to be springing up all over the country ? We should have a venue the size of those in similar sized cities. It's probably unrealistic to go for something as big as those in Leeds, Sheffield <Liverpool, Manchester as those cities are so much bigger than Hull but I think something similar to what they have in places like Nottingham, Bristol, Newcastle etc. would be ideal.

There are reasons they are bigger than Hull. They are not small time and small minded.
Folks from Paull, Brid, Goole, Beverley, Cottingham, Scarborough etc are either on the doorstep of or have to drive past Hull to get to Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester to get to these venues it would be easier to go to one in Hull PLUS we would then get BIG acts in Hull.
I have visited Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield arenas more than once and then faced getting home in the early hours. I can assure you I would rather visit a Hull arena and get home at a reasonable time as well as keeping my cash in the city of Hull.

The arguement of 'Well we are not as big as Leeds etc' as a reason not to do something is a self fulfilling proficiency.

Nottingham, Bristol and Newcastle have arenas that are 10,000+.

The arena needs to be adequate enough to attract the big bands, the 'sell out tours' Kasabian as an example, we wouldn't have to fill a 10k+ arena ourselves, people will come from far and wide to see these big acts if they can get a ticket.

They aren't thinking about the long term future. It sounds enough to start with but by the time it establishes it's self as a well known venue then it's going to be outdated and too small. It's very short sighted and would eventually need expanding just like the KC Stadium now needs expanding.

It needs to compete with the like of the Manchester Apollo and Manchester O2 academy but also needs to find some middle ground between them and places like the MEN. This is so it can hold other non music events like WWE Wrestling, Sport and conventions.

The problem is, we tried that at the KC and it was a disaster and it's made people nervous about trying to fill a big venue again.

I'd have hoped it would be bigger if it was used to a gig venue.

We've got the Welly club & (potentially) the Fruit Market for the smaller venues.

The KC was always going to be problematic simply because it takes so damn much to convert it plus its hard to fit dates in due to the fact the it's always in use sport wise (It struggles to accomodate more than 1 gig at a time instead of blocks of dates like tours like) and it's open to the elements.

Sorry but the KC cannot be used as a reason as it is like comparing apples and oranges.
