Do you really think we have that market sewn up? Just compare a weeks worth of gigs in Leeds, Sheffield or Manchester (excluding the arenas obviously) to a weeks worth of gigs in Hull and you'll realise just how far behind we really are.
Watched big name groups all over the north of england and to this day The Who at the KC were fantastic and up in my top3 gigs that ive ever been too....was nearly full i recall but dont quote me on that.Wasnt it JLS who played KC last to a sell out audience?
Brid Spa gigs are run by East Riding of Yorkshire council and do a half-decent job of attracting bands.
Ice arena, City Hall and Asylum are all mid-sized... just because nobody is making the effort to put mid-sized acts on here, doesn't mean we don't have the facilities to cater for them!
Ice Arena isn't practical, it can't be used regularly and is too expensive due to the conversion required. Asylum has about half the capacity required for the decent touring acts we would like to attract. City Hall is booked up with plays, tribute bands and comedy, even when its free there seems to be a reluctance for bands to play there. We need a dedicated music venue big enough to compete with the O2 venues and we simply don't have that.
I wouldn't have said the KC gigs were a disaster. Most were well attended and some were even sell outs. Admittedly the Who gig was poorly attended but that was a result of 'forgetting to promote' the gig and then promoting the 'extra' gig at Sheffield instead. I am sure we can support big gigs in Hull.
Shocking weather for nearly all concerts as I remember. Who, REM, Bon Jovi all had monsoon rains. Deters walk up crowds and leaves so-s0 memories for attendees. That said, the Who was up there with best music nights I've had in Hull.
3,500 is a joke, Leeds Arena 13,500. You will never get quality bands etc in a small venue. World class acts need big arenas for ticket sales. Typical council small time thinking again.
Cllr Bayes seemed perplexed when it was suggested groups as popular as One Direction wouldn't play at such a tiny venue.
Was i the only one in the KC crowd hoping jon bon jovi or watever his name is gonna go arse over tit on that slippy looking catwalk!
I am going to see the Beach Boys at York Race course next week, but not sure how many are likely to be there.
First glimpse of new £36m music and events venue in Hull city centre... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image Size-wise, the new 3,500-seat Hull venue is on par with Brid Spa and the 02 Academy in Leeds. The new Hull music and events venue will be biggest one-off council spend since the KC Stadium in 2002. The new Hull venue is purple, new 150-bed hotel in yellow, car park in black and Princes Quay extension in orange... please log in to view this image All courtesy of Angus Young at the HDM. £36m for a 3,500 capacity venue seems very steep to me.
