Inspired by the preseason thread. Name the three roughest boozers you've frequented in Hull. 1. Elephant and Castle mid 90's. An absolute air of menace as soon as you walked in. A mate was a 'local' so I was just about safe in there. Hostile doesn't come close. 2. Skippers. As a lad from that neck of the woods with plenty of the clientele old school mates you might think I'd feel comfortable in the place. Wrong, full of nutters and arse holes. 3. Tam Tams. Full of bams ( as Irvine Welsh would say) and definitely not for the faint hearted. Rough as arseholes.
Went in Elephant a few times in the early-mid 90s, some truly mad heads (in every conceivable) in there. Think there was a bit of an exodus into Crown and The Bank in the mid 90s when it briefly closed. Used to pop in Earl de Grey ‘round the same time – even though it contained some ‘characters’ I’m supposing its true batshit heyday had long gone. Red Hell used to be ‘lively’ – maybe still is.
Goat and Compass. Actually just popped in for a piss. Walked in and straight out again. Horrible, horrible place. Even the bull terriers had pints. Schooner. I was in a suit after a wedding so looked a bit out of place with the clientele who were mostly in vests and Sports Direct summer collection items. Spotted Dog - went to measure a job in there and landlady foisted a drink on me that was on the house until I told her the price of the job. Necked it in about 30 seconds. Notable mentions to The Abbey - drinks served in cans & Marrowbone and Cleaver before it became The Barrowman.
Some good choices there, think a few places may get overlooked though with them been on estates and only locals drinking in them. I would go with: Elephant and castle - some serious rough lads in there Sportsman (Headon rd if I remember right) - some seriously hard fellas used to drink in there, can't think of a single visit when I didn't see a brawl Mr Czzzz (formerly Telstar) on BransHolme - went I'm on three separate occasions when I was 15, first visit some guy opened up with a shotgun after a scrap, second time, guy got done with a samurai sword, third time someone was turned away so drove his car into the front door
The Park on Bev Rd. Walked in with some mates in the 80,s .....Landlord seeing us said get out . Never even sniffed a beer...
****ing hell I forgot Steam Tavern on Anlaby Road. The Wild West. Harry Wheeler and co kept that place a lively spot to go in, they could smell East Hull from 500 yards.
Never saw anything wrong with the Earl, Saturday night after a game, cage girls, what more could you want?
I dated a girl whose family owned Hull Cheese at the time Some of the dodgy dealings that went on there were ****ing ridiculous - I'm pretty sure 1 or 2 of her relatives ended up in prison
I was referring to when an unhinged head case went in there wielding a chainsaw. Got his head stoved in with beer kegs and chairs for his trouble by unamused locals.
