Contrary to popular opinion, games are not won in midfield; quite simply, they are won by scoring more goals than the opposition! I hope that doesn't sound trite but, basically, that is the essence of the game! But goals seem to be rarer these days than the proverbial. Modern football is played with swarms of midfielders packing the centre third of the park and often with a lone striker battling against two or three centre backs. The nett result is - great difficulties in scoring. Present day formations are not geared to attack in depth. We used to play 4 2 4 and 4 3 3. Now we play 5 3 2 or 3 5 2 or even, dare I say it, 4 6 0. The odds are now more in favour of defenders. There used to be more forwards getting into the penalty area, feeding off goalkeeping and defensive slip ups. This is where players like Jimmy Greaves and Denis Law and our own Ken Wagstaff were so lethal and earned the "goal poacher" accolade. Forwards would "shoot on sight" more. Malcolm MacDonald always said he wasn't afraid to miss. One shot may hit the bloke in Row Z but the next would scream into the top corner of the net. We are all fantasy managers these days. So, just for fun, I will pick a Hull City team using an old 4 3 3 formation; McGregor Elmo Dawson Chester Robertson Hudd Diome Livermore Jelavic N'Doye Hernandez In terms of the modern game, people will say there is no balance to the team but this side would, theoretically, be able to play more in the opposition's penalty area with three strikers getting among the defence with Diome just behind. Elmo and Robertson would be old style overlapping full backs. As I said - it's only fantasy. Feel free to tear the team and the theory apart. EDIT Sorry Mods, didn't see Chazz's post. Feel free to merge.
the butcher did, he chopped the extra bit off for me, which i didnt expect, im thankful, its more than i expected
My dad (god rest his soul) gave me some useful advice. "never converse with an idiot". I will take his advice...goodnight monster
Nice try Chazz, If it had been us doing this, the mods woulda been all over it. I think this weekends break will do us the world of good. I agree btw, Bruce Jnr makes a mistake and the pack pounces on him, Macca makes mistakes and they sing about not selling him. Both can do a job, both have their flaws and both need to be gone at the end of the season.
Not sure about this. If I've got my dates right previous weekend breaks have resulted in a draw and 3 losses. Arsenal 2-2, Spurs 2-1, Newcastle 3-0, Swansea 3-1. Seems we're ****e after a wekend off!
We're closer though at the mo to some key players coming back off injuries. A solid weeks training, maybe a behind doors game, they'll be fresh and ready for a week tomorrow.
Yeah, I like this line-up too (with McShane on the bench to move into left back if necessary), though I might go with Aluko ahead of Hernandez.
****.... I just saw it didn't copy the whole of Fez's quote. The line-up I'm referring to is the one posted by "Mauled".
No one's mentioned Ramirez yet. Is he fit? Who would slip him back in, and if so, where? Would putting him in the hole behind N'Doye be too negative?
You want him to slip into N'Doyes hole? Dirty bastard! I'd like to see Ramirez playing, as well as Hernandez from the start. I genuinely, still, think they have something to offer and we've not seen anywhere near their best yet. Time is running out mind.
It really depends. Against Tottenham he played in the hole in a sort of 4231 with Ben Arfa and Brady either side of him and Jelavic up front. It was the best we've played this season going forward, until he got sent off. To do something similar you'd need a more attacking winger than Elmo. Brady and Aluko might be a shout with Elmo at RB. But having said all that, if ever there was a game not to start playing attacking football all of a sudden its Palace. They're opening everyone up on the counter at the moment.
