Sports psychologist Steve Black has left the club …

    • Sports psychologist Steve Black leaves QPR
    • Black spent 18 months at Loftus Road
STEVE Black has left QPR after spending almost 18 months with the club.

The motivational speaker and sports psychologist was brought in towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign, and played his part in QPR’s dramatic promotion to the top-flight.

This season he remained involved with the club in a consultancy capacity.

The club would like to thank Steve for his contribution during his time at Loftus Road, and wish him every success in the future.

Does this mean the winning mentality he instilled this season will be forgotten?

How can players win if someone's not there to tell them (in cringe worthy cliches)?

More importantly, is there a cartwheel emoticon. Preferably one that comes with a parade of assorted floats and elephants and coloured bits of paper fluttering in the wind. And dancing girls. And fireworks.

Whatever happens now and I know it's still early days, to me it looks like we are starting from scratch and lessons may have been learnt at last.

As a club QPR need to learn how to walk again. The old saying goes that Rome was not built in a day. I just hope a solid plan is now in place and despite the inevitable up's and downs we stick to it.

Every other trick has failed so far!

Good riddance, let's get back to basics - motivation for the players should be their hard work on the training ground and competing to make the team, not through the encouragement of some quack selling snake oil.

I've always been of the opinion that if a player in any team can't motivate himself he shouldn't be in the team, Adel was the perfect example but we've had far too many others in the past few seasons...

Fitness guru Steve Black, who Jonny Wilkinson calls 'a second father', could entice Charlie Austin into joining Newcastle
    • Steve Black is set to join Steve McClaren's backroom team at Newcastle
    • Black has worked with Jonny Wilkinson, who raves about his influence
    • Striker Charlie Austin worked closely with him at QPR last season

The man credited with much of Jonny Wilkinson’s success could hold the key to Newcastle signing QPR striker Charlie Austin.

Fitness and psychology guru Steve Black is set to join Steve McClaren’s backroom team at St James’ Park.

And Sportsmail understands it is hoped Black’s relationship with Austin - who scored 18 times for the relegated R's last season - will persuade the new England man that his future lies on Tyneside.

Austin fired in 18 goal for Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League last season but they still went down

The pair worked together at Loftus Road and hold each other in the highest regard.

Indeed, Black was impressed by Austin’s application and work ethic on the training ground and admires the manner in which the 25-year-old has made his way from non-league to the top-flight in just five seasons.

Newcastle have already held talks with Austin’s representatives and the £10million-rated frontman is set to decide on his future in the coming weeks.

But Black’s expected presence among the support staff at Gallowgate will be a huge draw.

Harry Redknapp was blown away by Black’s impact at QPR and McClaren used him in a freelance capacity at Derby County, while World Cup-winning rugby union star Wilkinson says the former Newcastle Falcons coach was like a second father.

Wilkinson once wrote: ‘It is difficult to narrow down what Blackie’s strengths are because there are no weaknesses. His class is his ridiculous knowledge, his thirst for gaining more and his ability to apply it all to an athlete. Blackie treats everybody as an individual and has always found the best way to help me to get better, just by being myself.

That is very interesting - Charlie had incredible success although I thought his work rate dropped (note that Vardy and Ings are considered hard working whereas in the previous season Austin would have at least been their equal if not better). It could be the frustration of lack of service but he used to win posession (corners, free kicks, botched clearances) and the odd goal by working tirelessly.

As for the rest of the team, I've never seem a set of players so scared to receive the ball and so terrified of hanging onto it.

Newcastle, McLaren, Joey or anyone else is welcome to good ol' Blackie.

Though I personally react fairly caustically to people like Black (aka charlatans) I wouldn't deny that they can have a positive impact in certain circumstances. Individuals who are already motivated - Wilkinson, Barton, Austin - can benefit from having someone to channel their motivation, they are willing subjects, and actually pre-programmed to do well within the limits of their abilities. A 'quick win' for the 'guru'. With teams of mixed personalities it's much more difficult. Maybe Black contributed to the stubborn streak the team developed through the play offs last season, but his box of tricks and gimmicks soon ran dry.

I'd be honest enough to ascribe some success in the siege mentality from the end of the last Championship to Black's presence but, as you say, it's almost like a novelty factor.

My comments about fear of/on the ball and Austin's reduced workrate (admittedly from super-human to average) still stand and can be attributed to their mentality.

They were rambling on about SB going to Newcastle on Talksport this morning. Newcastle are welcome to him. For a sporting guru, he would do well to convince himself to lose a few stones, judging by his photo. Whatever input he gave us it clearly made no overall positive impact for our PL season.

Get Eileen Drewary or whatever her name is, we need some proper witchcraft not this motivational nonsense.
Ramsey has already undermined any motivational work by saying not to expect too much next season. Certainly won't motivate anyone to join us if they think it will be a step to the Premier League.

If Ramsey had said we're going for it while we had 10 odd players less than last season then we'd be sending a message out that we're spending big and probably paying the wages to boot.

That would probably attract ambitious types that would move on if we didn't get promotion and would sit on their wages if we didn't (ie same mistakes again).

We've managed to get Luonga who's highly rated but recognises his need to play and develop without such bold claims because he thinks being here is ultimately the right thing for him. He'll have ambition but it won't necessarily be Premiership football in 12 months (especially if he can see that the following seasons will see an increasingly strong promotion push).

It's ambition without being overambitious and treading over the same flawed ground.

Blackie is getting a big talk up on SSN for getting Newcastle and George Wijnaldum in particular (scored 4) going yesterday. They showed clips of him speaking in the player's ear after the game no less!

He featured briefly on the on plane documentary about rugby I watched yesterday. He's a fitness trainer, judging by what he was doing with Wilkinson (who is by his own admission an OCD nutter). Quite funny watching Wilkinson exhausting himnself on fitness exercises before going out to practice precision kicking (match situation duplication) with this Geordie lard bucket looking on, essenstially saying 'Slow down Jonny, you'll hurt yourself'.
