Of course they can be passionate, most got into the industry because they love music. However, at mainstream labels they sign artists that will make the company money not just what they enjoy personally. At independent labels there's obviously a lot more freedom.
I'd agree actually - think they're ****e, never bought a record of theirs but I saw them at Glasto about 6 years ago and they just belonged. It made sense there. Plus, I pulled during Fix You.
I mean like anyone. You don't have to work in the industry to get it. Music means different things to different people. To some its everything, to others its nothing. Music touches everyone in a different way. Stuff that makes me go cold, will fire up and excite someone else. Clearly lots of people enjoy Coldplay and Little Mix and thats what music is about. Touching you. Personally I have varied tastes, I love late 70s and early 80s Crass type Punk, guitar based indie, hardcore trance, electronica, Norwegian black metal and grunge and goth. I've always loved Hip Hop and Rap (reminds me of a new generation of what I loved about Punk, and its basically street poetry), and I like UK Grime and urban beats. I also enjoy listening to Little Mix and Maroon 5. They make me happy. Can't stand Weller, but rate Kurt Cobain as one of the greatest musicians of the last century. Casually dismissing stuff that's popular as ****, or an affront to the industry, or the public, just displays rank ignorance of what music is and what it does. Is some of it mass produced, soulless and commercial? Sure. But someone likes it. So, you know, who cares? You might think its cool to diss it, but it doesn't, it just makes you look daft.
Yet others will love The Beatles, The Stones, Bowie, Queen...etc, including the artists you like that were heavily influenced by them. Dismissing any music purely because its 'mainstream' is ridiculous.
This is a 'Brits' thread. Should have carried on doing the 'Brats'. At least the Mercury Prize rewards quality, rather than the mainstream executives who you stated, don't know good music. Make your mind up.
The Mercury prize is still mainstream, it's just more pretentious than the Brits. Most of the artists are associated with major labels and the nominations are heavily influenced by people involved in that side of the music industry.
Exactly. Beyonce and Jay-Z are corporate business owners (Tidal). They're still good artists though, and mainstream as well. I've never had much time for Beyonce or her music but I like Jay-Z's music. Each to their own.
No ****. I never mentioned the music itself, as that would be ridiculous. Where would I draw the line?
Even though this will conclusively prove that I know nothing about music, may I take this opportunity to state that I think M People were and are ****ing ****.
Sat watching this massive pile of dogger with Junior Senior. Chris Martin is such a ****, needs to be involved with everything, what was that George Michael tribute about? Total ****e. Now he's shouting whilst prancing about with some no marks called the chain smoking people. Weak as piss. I wouldn't put it past the helmet to don a blonde curly wig and perform ' rockin' all over the world' in tribute of Parfit. Just **** off Martin you tit end, just **** right off.
