Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has revealed to the Birmingham Mail that he opted against competing with Queens Park Rangers for midfield duo Massimo Luongo and Ben Gladwin because it was “not the right time”.
Luongo, 22, worked with Sherwood during his time at Tottenham Hotspur, before making a permanent move to Swindon Town in August 2013 following a successful loan stint.

The Australia international had been linked with a switch to Villa since last month after growing into one of the Football League’s brightest talents, before reports surfaced over the weekend that the club were also hoping to land teammate Gladwin

The former non-league star, also 22, joined the Robins from Marlow in November 2013 and is coming off a stellar 2014-15 campaign, in which he recorded 11 goals and eight assists in 40 total appearances
Sherwood’s relationship with Swindon chairman and ex-Norwich teammate Lee Power had been expected to help him land the pair but both instead made a £4 million joint move to relegated Queens Park Rangers this week.

However, while the Villa boss confirmed that their names were on his summer transfer wishlist, he ultimately did not seem too deterred about missing out on them to close friend Chris Ramsey, even suggesting that a move to the Championship was the right choice.

“It’s not the right time for us to do them deals,” said Sherwood. “I think it is a good move for both of them because it will give them the opportunity to play regularly.

“I know them very well because I spent a lot of time watching Swindon. It will be a chance for them to get promoted with QPR.”

Certainly, with Villa already boasting Fabian Delph, Ashley Westwood, Carlos Sanchez, Gary Gardner and potentially soon-to-be free agent Tom Cleverley at their disposal for next season, it is understandable that Sherwood did not make more of than effort to go after Luongo and Gladwin.

Both could well have proved solid additions to his squad but it sounds like the ex-Spurs head coach has other targets in mind.
Added Sherwood: “They were just two players who were on a very long list.”
Will Villa regret missing out on Luongo and Gladwin?

That's bull****. He would have signed them if he could.

“They were just two players who were on a very long list.”

    Sore loser.

Sherwood had to come out and say something.

Villa fans are no different from most others who will say "Why didn't they sign for us? Someone isn't doing his job properly" when a player they were in for is signed by another club. I've often read similar on here about our alleged targets.

    Usual guff.
