Welcome to the punch Watched this on Netflix the other day. Hadn't seen it before and as Mark Strong was in it decided to give it a go. Glad i did tbh. Pretty good stuff with a very good cast. Gets a bit far fetched at times and yer man McAvoy hams it up a wee bit too much. Strong is terrific though. He really is a class act.....or. 7/10 Network One of the best. 9/10
I thought Hateful Eight was ok, but didn't have a particularly great storyline - was obvious which way it was going to go and didn't have many surprises. Good Tarantino one-liners though.
Genius Excellent film about the relationship between Max Perkins and Thomas Wolfe. Perkins was the editor at publishing house Charles Scribners and worked with just Wolfe but F Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway as well. Colin Firth does a fine job as the stoic, straight laced Perkins trying to tame the enigmatic and precocious Wolfe and turn his ramblings into the best selling novels they were to become. Wolfe is played by Jude Law in one his best roles to date. The supporting cast is excellent too. Nicole Kidman and Guy Pierce, Laura Linnie and Dominic West all pop up. Thoroughly enjoyable flick. 7/10
Money monster Enjoyable flick about the evils of wall street starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts but it's Jack O'Connel that steals the show. Quite literally in fact. Clooney plays a TV money expert and Roberts his director. When one of his tips bombs by losing 800 million dollars over night due to a computer glitch the **** hits the fan. I'll say no more. This is pure fantasy btw but it is an enjoyable flight of fancy with some laugh out loud moments. 6/10. The Eichmann show (netflix) Very good film. Anthony LaPaglia is excellent in it. 7/10
Imperium Danny Radcliffe as an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a nazi gang Good story but goes too quick in him joining gang to getting in with top men and finding out master plan. Decent 6.5 / 10
just watched Serenity again. 9/10. great cast, great story with lots of humour. such a shame the tv show was cancelled.
300: rise of an empire. What a load of crap. I quite enjoyed the original but this is just boring horrible ****. I nearly turned it off twice as I had enough but I persevered to the end to give it a 4/10. Rubbish.
Barry Norman once said he HAD to sit through the ****test films from start to finish just so nobody could accuse his reviews of being unfair as the film "had improved later".
The Magnificent Seven. Hollywood continues to be so bereft of new ideas that it seems no matter how good an original film is the money making machine will remake it. The last few years has seen them copy and paste some mighty classics. Non mightier than TM7 imo. That's not to say this isn't a good film. In fact, as a stand alone western it's a very good effort. If you haven't seen the original, which is highly unlikely, and have nothing to compare with it then it's a great effort. But alas, i have and i did. Let's just say Chris Pratt is nae Steve McQueen. Denzel does his typically fine job as the leader of our merry band and Vincent D'Onofrio steals every scene he's in. You know the story. Just swap peasent Mexican farmers for poor put upon townsfolk and jobs a good un. Not a patch on the original but well worth a watch. 7/10
