I'm afraid that's nonsense, we've only just started investing in our academy, we've spent nothing on it previously. These things don't happen overnight, I'd expect it to take years before we start seeing quality players coming into the first team. Pennock's record at Swansea was excellent, that's exactly why we brought him in, but there's no quick fix.
I appreciate what you're saying about the timeframe, these things take time, but surely the likes of Clark, Townsend and Dixon should be at least trying to push for a first team spot? I mis-used the word 'academy' there, I used it as a generalised term for the u18s and the development squad which is obviously wrong, but even so, surely Lenihan (who played in the Championship at Blackpool for a couple of games), Townsend and Watson are just about ready for at least a little Championship football?
I think the aim with the likes of Lenihan is to shortcut the fact that we haven't got good enough lads already and try and pick up some lads that don't cost a fortune, but are far more likely to make it to the first team. Townsend either needs to be about ready for first team football now, or he needs to be released, I expect Clark will go out on loan this season.
That's a worrying thought though, because we've been signing 17 and 18 year olds for a while now and with the exception of Cairney and Cullen, none have made the first team as of yet. It's a surprise that many lads that age don't turn us down given our reputation, they'd be better off going to a League 1 or 2 academy where they know they're going to get into the first team and get valuable league experience.
Its interesting though as a pro club, which has been on the up for many years now we dont produce first team players after having them from age 8. Yet Meyler comes from some backwater and makes it, same as Quinn and many others i expect. We control these kids lives for years and years to then throw them on the scrap heap. It must be the poor quality coaching.
To be fair there are at least 3 under 21 squad members who been at the club since a young age who are good enough for the first team.
No there are not. We have 3 who will be attempting to get a spot but they will almost certainly not be in the first team and will probably go out on loan.
I don't know if he had some sort of fall out at Swansea, but when he joined us he said he was no longer enjoying himself there.
and that.. and some of this bit of this bit more of this.. then this after this.. finally this then on twitter..
How **** was Cullen by the way? Some silly bastard on here kept saying he was going to be the next Robbie Fowler. More like Pauline, at a push Arthur and definitely not as good as Mark.
Gonna feature for us next season apparently... Relegated Tigers believe Caribbean flyer could make an impact in the Championship next season. Hull City have agreed a new deal with young winger Calaum Jahraldo-Martin, HITC Sport understands. The 22-year-old has agreed an initial 12-month extension, HITC Sport has learned from a club source and Hull are fully expecting him to make an impact on the first-team this coming season. Jahraldo-Martin was snapped up by Hull from non-league Dulwich Hamlet in 2013, and he has made a handful of first-team appearances for the club. Hull enjoyed two loan spell last season with Tranmere Rovers and then earlier this year with Scottish side Alloa Athletic, and he has returned to East Yorkshire happy to have been handed a new deal. HITC Sport understands that Hull boss Steve Bruce is hoping the Caribbean winger will push for a first-team spot, following their relegation from the top-flight. Hull are currently 9/4 favourites with SkyBet for promotion to the Premier League. Jahraldo-Martin is also a full international as he has ten caps for Antigua and Barbuda. Can Calaum Jahraldo-Martin make an impact next season.
