Fantastic post Saffy - what a team we had then ! I seem to remember Mendonca being from Sunderland and he wouldnt have anything to do with his family - is that true? Cant remember the details. Ironic that he almost single-handedly demolished us that day!
That was then, this is now. Two totally different teams and circumstances. Charlton mean nothing to me and we shouldn't build this up into something it's not. Just get out there and beat them.
I agree 100% mate. 2 even teams but for sure we have players that edge them. Fit and on form we should get it done. They have nothing in midfield, we need the lads to step up and dominate from there.
hard to believe that was 21 years ago...but as Smug says, that was then, this is now. Haway the lads.
I met a charlton supporter at Roker park 1978 Took him for pre match drinks We have been family friends since. He has been up here a few times with his family and attended matches and we have been down their We met up at Wembley 1998 for the playoff final. I’ve only seen them once since 2009 but still send Christmas cards
yup, bonkers to think it was that long ago. feel like a right awld git today. Thursday night and the stress-busting alcohol imbibed probably got summat to do with it.
Reminiscing now. Who remembers this between Grant and Catts? 50/50 crunch tackle and both flew into it and jumped up with their hands around each others throats haha please log in to view this image
the lump in my throat after this match i can still remember, it was if i was gamming Linford Christie. still remember my emotions vividly, Only time i felt this bad was when my Mam died
Typically, Honeyman starts, or is out of the side completely, due to injury or suspension, but in one of those odd matches where he was brought on as a sub (for Gooch), he immediately sprints from the sideline to Power, and abruptly reclaims the captain's armband. You could see clearly that Power was taken aback by this. Even more curious, the ref had to send Honeyman back to the little kid's table, because Gooch had not made his way off the pitch yet.
The 98 game was a tough one to take - especially as it was inflicted by two local lads Clive Mendonca (hat-trick) and Micky Gray (penalty miss). It was totally surreal travelling back into central London on the underground, so subdued. The Charlton supporters were class and knew that we were all hurting bad - so didn't rub our noses in it. The only good thing was that we went on to storm the division the following season and set us up for what were the best few seasons that I can remember supporting the lads. We can do this - Ha'way
I remember the Charlton fans, they were ****ing brilliant after the game. They were running around all over with us, having a laugh and a drink, no gloating, was quite surreal as you say. Shame in a way on that we can’t both go up, but come Sunday **** them
Nads That's exactly how I recall the after match meetings between the fans, what I couldn't understand was why were so many leaving before they could properly celebrate, not that they had far to go to get home. Then afterwards for the Checkatrade was similar, lots of fans on the winning side outside the stadium when they should have been cheering on their team. When we won the cup in 73 the stewards had to ask us to leave as they wanted to clean up the terraces, different breed these young fans today.
In the league cup final the Man City fans left the stadium when the final whistle went. Loads of them were on the tube before the players even lifted the trophy.
