I 'discovered' that Radio Caroline is alive and well yesterday. No chart crap, virtually NO repetitive, bland, adverts and with a heavy emphasis on album bands / tracks, it really is refreshing to listen to They also provide daily triv, which I'll start posting here until people tire of it. http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/#home.html 1492: Christopher Columbus (Christoffa Corombo) becomes the first European to set foot on the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). 1952: In what becomes know as the 'Great Smog' a cold fog descends upon London, combining with air pollution and killing at least 12,000 in the weeks and months that follow. Music 1932: Richard Wayne Penniman is born, later to become professionally know as Little Richard. His work in the mid 50's would prove pivotal to the birth of Rock 'n' Roll as well as later genres like soul and funk. 2006: In yet another Beatles memorabilia sale handwritten lyrics by Paul McCartney for an early version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" sell for £97,000 ($192,000) at an auction in New York.
On this day: News 1917: A huge explosion near Halifax, Nova Scotia kills more than 1,900 people when munitions aboard the French ship SS Mont-Blanc ignite after a collision and fire. It is considered the largest artificial explosion up to that time. 1975: What becomes known as the Balcombe Street Siege begins when a Provisional IRA unit take a couple hostage following a police chase in London. The siege would end six days later when the men surrender and release the hosages unharmed. Music 1969: As the Rolling Stones play at a free festival at Altamont in California, audience member Meredith Curly Hunter is stabbed to death by Hell's Angels who'd been hired to police the event after being ejected from the stage area and returning with a drawn revolver. 1988: Singer songwriter Roy Orbison dies of a heart attack aged 52. His early death was even more tragic as he'd recently finished recording his come-back album Mystery Girl with Jeff Lynne who had also enrolled him in his and George Harrison's supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.
