Surely the individual schools head teachers and teachers are the only ones who can say if their school will be suitable for pupils to be back. It matters not one **** if the government say its OK, if the teachers on the ground say they can't make it as safe as practical for pupils and staff, they don't open. That doesn't make them anything but sensible, responsible people. I detest the way the press are behaving
I think this is far too simplistic unfortunately. Whilst it does predominantly kill older people with underlying conditions, a secondary issue we have is that even though it doesn't kill as many younger people, it still puts a lot of them in hospital which risks overwhelming the NHS. As far as I'm aware, the UK is not publishing this info yet, but this is what was found in Spain. So to use the 30-39 category as an example. For every 1000 infected, only 3 people died, but 206 needed a hospital bed. It shows why we can't release lockdown too early in my opinion. please log in to view this image
Thousands of people will be legally going to beauty spots like the Lakes. But all the pubs, cafes, hotels, etc, are closed, where will they all do their shytes, what is Hancock's guidance ... ... should the steaming piles be 2 metres apart and where does everyone wash their hands?
Interesting that it would appear that more 0-9 year old required hospital treatment than 10-19, yet they are the school ages going back first.
I've no idea what the underlying reasoning is behind it mate, but I suspect older teenagers can handle it better or articulate themselves better. If you have a baby or a toddler in distress with those symptoms, parents will naturally **** themselves and get to a hospital.
I must be honest, I try not to think how my daughter would cope if she caught Covid and needed hospital treatment. Its probably my biggest fear of this whole thing
I would say that's true (it won't count those that were sent home) but it may count those kept in overnight "as a precaution". I've no idea mind, that part is just speculation from me.
Yeah there’s that. I’d imagine it’s anyone seen by a doctor, as that would register as a case. It’ll be months before we have a clue what the figures equate to and that’s half the issue. Germany eased locked down, went up to 1.1 R rate, then it settled days later. Its so vague, they’ve made it hard for me to fear it, yet not concise enough for me to feel fully safe from it. Talk about clear as mud. We were so slow out the blocks with testing that the R rate rising could actually be falling as far as we know. The fact we are looking at Germany and Spain’s data shows how poorly it’s been handled here.
I think the main concern I have with looking at Germany is that their data seems so much more accurate than ours. Because of the number of tests they have been doing for weeks, it gives them a clearer picture. Before Lockdown eased there "r" was 0.65. We were told that ours is between 0.5 and 0.9, and it's now between 0.7 and 1. That's a pretty big variable when lives are at stake. Germany were able to stay calm when the "r" jumped to 1.1 but will we be able to stay that calm if our "r" rises to between 1.1 and 1.5?
But loosely looking at our numbers, our ‘r’ has clearly been way, way higher at some point, we can figure that through maths mate. The testing, or lack of, has been the biggest failing.
My father-in-law has fairly progressive dementia and keeps saying to my children on Skype (or whatever) that they can come around to see him as it's ages since we've been [insert memory joke here if you wish]. My daughter (3) has been asking after breakfast each morning when we're going to see them again as he even said things like "we've made the bed, it's waiting for you" etc. It's tricky as he really doesn't have any appreciation of the fact that he is exactly the kind of person who needs to be shielded from my children!! Plus, it may be a cliche but it's true, even when we explain why we still have to explain the next time. Honestly think it'll be months yet before we're comfortable sending the kids to give him a hug (he has a variety of conditions...). Great to hear your waiting is soon over mate, I'm sure it'll be extra-special after the wait. Keep well.
More lies from a minister.... the reasons why the govt wants schools to open is not about the childrens education, but rather the get their parents back to work!
I'm trying not to read them too much to be honest. I get the issues people may have with teachers not wanting to go back (and I really wish the unions would make an effort to just keep everything behind closed doors and not politicise this if they can) but the overall portrayal by some sections is as disappointing as it is expected. As a teacher I'm very open about the fact I'm probably only averaging about 20 hours of work each week (I do an hour or two a day and have to go in once a week) rather than a full week but the usage of terms like "closed schools" and "back to work" plays into a public perception that I'm just sat around on my holidays doing nothing. The papers are making it out to be very much a political decision and as though teachers are heavily unionised due to communist leanings. In all honesty I am in a union and most teachers are but it's for the sole reason (for myself and most I know) that on any day a pupil could accuse me of something and the school will not back me up - indeed they would be the ones who are tasked to investigate me. We're talking about things as mild as me leaving my room open and a child falling off a desk/chair whilst I'm not in the room. It's against school policy to allow pupils in rooms without supervision so they are excluded from liability and I am not! I'm very much expecting my profession to get slagged off about this and resigned to that, I'm mostly just going to concern myself with being happy that the children in my care are safe both physically and mentally (both school children and my own) and ignore the press as best I can.
WTF now .... "In another confusing twist on the UK's quarantine plans, the British government on Friday said that people travelling from France would not be exempted - just a week after a statement from both country's leaders said they would be."
I read the whole background into this, and the EU, those guys we are supposedly distancing from, said that ‘no special terms should apply between named countries’. You couldn’t make it up Smug.
Unreal Nads, I've had 2 agents here today so I can try to get some summer bookings. The place rents out for 15,000 euros a week so it's worth chasing. UK clients need to know wtf is happening and whether they can fly/drive and what happens when they get home.
