I like Bertrand but I think he is one of our highest earners and he is certainly not one of our top performers. He is pretty consistent and whilst he is one of our most experienced players, KWP coming in has shown that Bertrand offers comparatively little, at least in terms of going forwards anyway. Depending on the fee involved this might be decent business as it would likely end up reducing the wage bill as well improving the first team.
I'd keep Bertrand here if possible and buy in a new LB to compete with and replace him. I imagine that's what we'd like to happen in an ideal world, then even when the new signing takes the starting spot you have a reliable and experienced backup. We clearly want to keep Bertrand around as the contract negotiations have long since been talked about. But it would also be foolish of us not to be looking at his long term replacement considering his age.
It would be great to have him involved at the club either coaching or in another capacity. I think he’s a great pro and could be a wonderful example to the kids. A million loans, a champions league winners medal and he settles at Saints. Class player (despite “he was **** for that season at villa”) Love it.
We will miss Bertrand when he goes. Underated. Remember how easy it was going to be easy to get a right back at the beginning of last season !
Vestergaard continues to be linked with Spurs. It'll be annoying if he leaves now - we had 2 years of crap and then he has a very good 6 months of actually playing and buggers off on the cheap. Nothing concrete in the rumours mind you, but you can see why there would be interest with just a year left.
I wouldnt blame him if he left for spurs tbh... Fans have been exceedingly vocal beyond this season about how rubbish he is and willing to accept anything for him.. Now pull the loyalty card..Fickle fickle fickle. I do hope he stays, But Saints may view this as a good time to sell a asset, at a reasonable sum.
Reasonable my arse, quality centre backs are at premium prices and Spurs are unlikely to be the only team interested.
It depends what you consider a fair price, With 1 year left on his contract. I think if we were to receive a offer of £25Million, That would be a decent offer.. And Saints would seriously consider it. That is if Vestergaard doesn't plan to extend ofcourse.
Oh absolutely. I can see why they would want him and also see why he would want to leave. Even if Saints fans hadn't moaned at the start, Spurs are a bigger club and he would earn more. It would just be annoying from the point of view that we spent a big sum and likely good wages to only get 1 good season out of 3.
Yeah, I too feel that he has finally settled in, Adapted well and improved.. It would be nice to see him improve further and progress Saints up the league. He is also a leader on the pitch, Which we do need.
I very much doubt Vestergaard takes any notice of the on-line criticism that players get from idiot fans. Vestergaard especially is a highly intelligent person and probably has far better things to do with his spare time than read that kind of crap. If the club want him to stay then I reckon he will do just that because Ralph is building something at Saints and the future here could be very interesting.
Oh i definitely agree with you there, But I'm sure that past couple of seasons hasn't been the most easier for Jan, All the groans from the stands before Covid.. and other social media, Where fans spout there idiotic comments. I can see him extending too, I didn't expect Bednerak to do so earlier this year if i am honest, And Vestergaard looks very settled and comfortable in that backline now.
Definitely worth more than £18m. Tottenham will attempt to sign Southampton's£18m-rated Danish centre-back Jannik Vestergaard, 28, when the transfer window opens. (Express)
Southampton and West Ham are among the clubs interested in Manchester City's Venezuelan midfielder Yangel Herrera, 23, who is on loan at Spanish side Granada. (Goal)
If Vestergaard wants to go, I can't see us getting much more than £15m with only a year left on his contract. If he wants to leave or gets a good offer, he's in a strong position and one similar to Hojbjerg. You could argue that the reason Spurs got Hojbjerg relatively cheaply was because they agreed to give us a decent price for KWP providing we did the same for them, but I can't see clubs going much over £15m for Vestergaard. He's 29 in August and, if he doesn't extend his contract, will be free next June (and can actually negotiate a contract with a new club in January).
Makes no difference. If he wants to leave, his agent will already be sounding out clubs and that will determine whether he signs an extension or not I'd imagine.
After what Jose said about his team after the game at the weekend, if I were a player, I’d be very sceptical about going there. Yes, more money, but ...... Especially if Kane were to bugger off to a “Big club”
