Just 42 horses declared to run at Kempton Park on St Stephen's Day. The King George VI gets 9 but the Christmas Hurdle and Kauto Star just 5 and 4 respectively. Although, in fairness, the latter does have 2 bally good horses in it who could serve up a corking contest. Lieutenant Henderson has made 8 of the 42 decs and if Sporting Life are to be believed he has 4 out the current 6 market leaders.
Kempton King George VI 15,05 Asterion Forlonge 13/2 Lads and Coral. Win only. All or nothing. (I'm on 20/1 e/w three places) Whetherby 14,10 Top Ville Ben 12/1 e/w Lads and Coral three places, 10/1 four places sky, PP and betfair (I'm on 14/1 e/w) Won this race two years ago with 4lbs higher mark, back to handicap. Ground and trip fine, stable form is a concern (0-20 last 14 days)
So much to chose from, which sometimes is a good thing, but i am struggling to stay focused on any particular card at the moment... Always my favourite day of the year from a sporting and socialising point of view so i hope that you all of you out there in NOT606 land have a good time, eat well, and enjoy the Xmas festivities...
Pertemps Qualifier --- Wincanton As Barney states too often, these qualifiers have more plots than an Agatha Christie Novel, however this is one of the qualifiers that I think has good punting angles. 8 of last 10 winners - Aged 5 9 of last 10 winners - no headgear 7 from 10 winners - ran within 15 to 42 days 2 from 8 runners - Philip Hobbs - 80% of runners beaten from his horses 2 from 7 ran in a Grade 3 last time out All point towards Orbys Legend with a saver on Barbados Bucks who returns from fences (3 from 19 returning from chase race LTO)
If the dear old regular readers get a few spare mins over the Festive period can I suggest that you have a look at The Lieutenant's Surfman. An intruiging new recruit to the NH sphere. On his penultimate run was 3rd in the '19 Dante and on his most recent appearance finished 8th, in that terms, Prix du Jockey Club. He's, obviously, been absent for a very, very, very long time but the 5YO son of Kingman (also very well bred on the dam's side of the pedigree as that old girl was a Group 3 winner on the level. And Surfman is also a half-brother to Group 1 winner, Kitesurf) has Potential with a capital 'P' and couldn't be in better 'magic hands'. Possibly, could be out as early as next Wednesday. Looking further ahead you can, currently, get 50/1 re the Supreme Novices. Although, the yard obviously have much, much more high profile runners re that prize!!!
Excellent piece, old boy. But you know how risky I think wagering in these Pertemps Qualifiers are (more plots and all that...). For me it is all about seeing where Dame De Compaigne finishes - ideally you would have to say 6th and a ratings reductions. Incidentally, a 3 lbs drop would see the old girl on exactly the same mark as she was on when she won the '20 Coral Cup at the Festival. Nudge, nudge, etc, etc. Have to ask the key question though. Who do you think will finish 6th?!?
Now seems like the perfect time to wish everyone, and I do mean everyone, a very, very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hope everything goes tickety-boo for you all and everyone enjoys the Festive period. Have a great time!
Merry Christmas everyone For those of you too busy watching the Queen's speech and Bond films on Christmas day, here some "Boxing Day lazy bet" combinations for you to consider: Dan Skelton's 4 rides at Wetherby Nico de Boinville's 5 rides at Kempton Jack Kennedy's 3 rides at Leopardstown Best bet: Rivere D'Etel in the Racing Post Novice Chase - she has taken full advantage of the weight allowances to rack up the hat-trick over fences (absolutely slamming some smart horses in the process) and gets 13lbs from Ferny Hollow here.
Alan King's Potterman is a very interesting runner here. He has been ultra-consistent over fences for the last 2 years (including a fine 2nd in the Badger Ales Trophy off 148 on seasonal debut) but pulled up in the Ladbrokes off the same mark and connections possibly feel he is handicapped to the hilt in that sphere now. He goes off 143 here and if the can get him qualified and dropped a couple of pounds he could be dangerous in the final (even though I think Dallas Des Pictons wins the final).
Slowly going through the vast array of races and runners on Boxing Day. Came across one which I like and that is in the 14:50 at Market Rasen and that is Potenza. Not much of a price at 3/1 forecast odds, but certainly has a decent chance in this handicap hurdle. Jack Quinlan takes the ride for the Harry Eustace stable. In the King George at Kempton, really don't want to see Frodon beaten, but there are some good'uns against him, so I'll just watch! So, onward with a look at all the other races! At least I have a bit of time to do it. Merry Christmas everyone!
Merry Christmas one and all. So much racing easy to lack focus so i'll recommend a Double at Limerick Daly Tiger / Farouk D'alene pays about 11/1. Worth an interest. Enjoy the mince pies!!
