TOMMY SMITH is selling all the medals from his glittering Liverpool FC career. The Anfield Iron's prized collection, which includes league title, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and European Cup winners' medals, will go under the hammer later this month. In total there are 75 lots which are expected to generate in the region of £120,000. "I had a wonderful career but the memories Iâve got are more important to me than the medals and the shirts," Smith said. "Iâm getting old and the money is of more use to me now than the medals. This is about me putting my family first." Read More http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/live...nd-memorabilia-100252-30295573/#ixzz1lv1Hyf37
Incredibly sad. You have to feel sorry for them. Why are the elderly get lead down the garden path and forced into drastic measures to feed and clothe themselves. Just not right!
Think it's more a case he wants to do more for his family mate. Still sad. Being old enough to have watched him live, the guy was a monster, but also a very good defender.
Tommy Smith was not from the 'minimum wage ' era of football. Contracts became 'golden' from the mid 1960s onwards( although of course not the silly money of today ...) He will have done very well.
It's such a pity that his club Liverpool couldn't help in some way, either a testimonial or purchase his medals to show case in their museum. After all he gave them starling service for years. Rock on Tommy.
My understanding is that he got a testamonial, many years ago, I dont GO for the poor footballer. How many of you have items worth £120,000 kicking around the house doing nothing? Everyday life is a struggle for ordinary folks, did Tommy Smith give a **** about the OAP, the poor, I dont think so, he was doing fine in his heyday, time does and will catch up, I know this only too well. One thing is for sure, I bet he wont freeze to death this winter. Dont wish the guy any badness, just aint got the sympathy. If he didnt play football, and wassent famous in his day WOULD YOU realy think about him ,,,, or give a ****,,,, thought not.
After serving my country for more years, than Tommy Smith played for Liverpool, I was not set up for life. started work at 15, still working at nearly 64, and not a gyro or hand out in sight. How long has Tommy worked, does he work? no god given rights on this one Im afraid.
BOE, valid points, and if he did receive a testimonal a few years back then he shouldn't get another, but i still say his former club could/should buy the medals, after all there are not that many players at Liverpool know what a winners medal looks like. And before any trawlers come on and berate me about Sunderland winners/medals we are and never been brought up on a diet of winning.
Now your talking. delusions never hurt any sane person, will check it out with those nice men in the white coats.
This raises a piont about the money in the game, when the England manager gets £6million and other players are on £200k a week (or £10Million a year). We go off it when bankers get paid £5million a year (which I dont think they are worth) even have debates in the House and we are happy to say nothing even complaint if the club are willing to pay the same amount out to a player. The world has gone mad! But how do we stop it?
