    Fair enough.

I just don't ever recall feeling as much empathy towards another bunch of fans, as I did towards the Argentinians at 2-2. It's bad enough seeing Saints throw away a two-goal lead in a meaningless Prem fixture. Imagine seeing England do it in a World Cup Final.

I remember England doing it in a WC QF against Ze Germans in 1970. I was nine, scarred me for life I think.

Argentina have now won the WC three times since then, and we’ve won ****all. So I would have had no tears to shed for them, especially after Simeone’s antics in 1998. Fair enough Messi ‘deserved’ to win a WC, but so did Cruyff, and probably Paul Gascoigne.

My pain from that game in '98 comes from the cheating ref disallowing Sol Campbell's goal. Simeone was just doing what cheating South Americans do, but that disallowed goal was as f*cking criminal as the Lampard over-the-line job in '10. Nowt wrong with it whatsoever. The ref in that game must have been bribed.

Also, we got revenge when Owen went over a bit easily for a pen in '02.

Too young to remember '86, and wasn't alive in '70. Was chatting to my old man about it last night though; all the weird food poisoning stuff.

'78 was my first World Cup I remember watching (apparently I did watch the '74 one, but I was not yet 5 and don't really remember anything except a lot of orange in the final). Thought Argentina were excellent then and also loved the ticker tape for each game. '82 has fond memories for me due to the winners and the Marco Tardelli celebration. '86 hurt me more than '90 to be fair as I really thought we had an excellent chance at winning the whole thing. The hand of god is unforgivable IMO, even if he scored one of the best WC goals of all time straight after. I may have mentioned 1986 a few times on here recently lol.

Yes 1970 for me & also scared for life. Personally I can’t remember a tournament where we over achieved (maybe my bar was a tad high?). Definitely a few where we under tho. :-(

We were 2-0 up against Portugal in the group stages of Euro 2000, only to lose 3-2.

Can’t say that I wanted a team that showed such poor gamesmanship and cheated so much to win to be honest. In the Netherlands game they were a disgrace

That's not the half of it. Go to YouTube and find explanations why Argentina do not have any black players. Systematic genocide and policíes to "whiten" the country!!

Someone had to win the final. I wasn’t supporting Argentina until then but I’d rather a nation that hasn’t won it for ages win it rather than one who won it last time! There’s also the fact that France are likely to be up there and competitive for championships in the coming years whereas Argentina have an aging team. When you add in the Messi factor and the fact they were the better team on the night it was an east choice for me.
