Wales beat the All Blacks 3-0 in Cardiff but the real reason why the game is remembered is because it was the first time ever that anyone’s national anthem was sung before an international sporting event The crowd sang it in response to New Zealand doing that Hokey Cokey dance of theirs rumour has it @Victor was there No I’m not kidding either this is on the level
Not 114 years ago, but 100 years ago. ......... I did not know that a Swans player had committed suicide under the Stand of the old Vetch field. His name was David "Tich" Evans. According to the story on Wales on Line, he was a very promising player who was expected to be a very promising Welsh player. Things started to go very wrong after he lost his Wife. I never knew of this before, did any of you.? If you are interested to find out more, the full story is on Wales on line.
There is a small mention of him in Chapter 1 page 24 of Geriant H Jenkins book "Proud to be a Swan" which doesn't shed any more light on his sad demise other than the link that Victors added
More info for you. ...... He was found by another player named Nicholas, who was practicing at the ground, and when he found him , discovered that he had cut his own throat. ..... quite a shock. He was bought from Barry, and had scored against the Swans in a 3 - 3 draw. ...... The Swans paid 100 pounds for him. ....... But it all ended in tragedy .
Taffvalerowdy ..... if you are in possession of that programme, hang on to it, a great collectors item. Did you know that the first time that the Welsh National Anthem was sung at a Sporting Venue was in 1905 , when Wales beat the All Blacks 3 - o. ...... When th Blacks had finished their Hacka some started to sing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, The whole crowd joined in. ....... Now it is performed at every. Welsh sporting event. I bet that even Bovi Or 8past7 as he calls himself now. Did not know that.
Hang on to them all, ..... valuable. 1953. Clem Thomas cross kicks from the left wing, ... Ken Jones the right wing scores. WALES. WIn.
Yes - I remember speaking to Clem about it. I knew him and 2 of his 3 sons. I remember listening to him on the radio as I drove to work one morning (5/9/96), and then later that day hearing that he had died.....
I have all the programmes complete with North enclosure tickets for all the home Welsh games during the 1970 golden years wonder if they will realise anything - not that I want to sell them
Don’t think the 1953 Programme is worth a great deal. I’m told my footie progs could be worth £1k-£2k
