George's podium today is worth the same as 3 sprint race victories. If you're going to nail a Saturday then yesterday was the right Saturday to nail
Very true. Only good part of today is that he got rewarded for a remarkable effort. Crap...now I'm more pissed off that he missed out on pole.
Given circumstances F1 literally hasn't experienced in 70 years, I think FIA, etc did the best they could today. They overruled some of the rulebook on the fly to give us every chance of a race, but it wasn't happening. Conditions weren't safe at any point this afternoon, and if they'd delayed any longer and they'd have run out of light. Perhaps waiting until 3 pm to start the race (for the TV slot) should be looked at, as it should be in places like Suzuka where they start even later. It's not a great advert for the race weekend when F3 managed a race, but F1 didn't. Not something you can change on the fly, but schedule the F1 race earlier to create a larger weather window than the ~4 hours they had today. Running tomorrow isn't practical due to the circuit license, volunteer marshals, security, etc, but as Lewis said, I hope fans get a refund, or at least a free ticket to next years event. Or find a gap in the calendar to have another go.
Have them race, with the pit lane limiter on, and with mandatory slicks to maximise driver input. If overtaking is still too hard, maybe a 20hp power boost available instead of DRS. But ideally, just the pit lane limiter and the slicks, to keep the racing pure.
I think they should have tried doing more laps behind the safety car. That way they had a slight chance of clearing some water and it would also have given the fans something to look at. These days there is too much money and too many contracts that would create a huge issue if the race was actually cancelled. Imagine the lawsuits that would have happened... Everyone from promoters, food sellers, fans, tv companies, etc would take FIA/Liberty to court.
Catching up on the F3 while getting dinner prepped...and I'm having a sense of Deja Vu. AND THE BLOODY AC MAN STILL HASN'T ARRIVED!!!! Stinging with rage today.... But I do now have a beer.
I imagine the spray would still be ridiculous. Just like following a truck closely on the motorway when it's pouring. The spray is one issue, and the other issue is that the aero just doesn't function as well at lower speeds, so generating the down force to keep it on the island is tougher. Maybe as we slowly reduce the aero dependency, we'll get to a point where wet racing is a little more doable. But those cars look bloody frightening in the wet.
With increased ground effects next year this problem is only going to get worse I imagine. Unless they trust the cars to vacuum all the water away in double quick time.
Heavier..wider, would hope it's a little better. It's just the rest of the races that might be pants.
Hmmm, you've given me an idea... I'm heavier and wider than I used to be. Next time it rains, I'll try running round a wet corner. Might be an indicator of how the cars will go next year . I'll probably bin it like Lando. That will be embarrassing.
In the media circle, went up to Max while he was being interviewed, shook his hand and said... Norris: "Great race mate unbelievable drive" Verstappen: "It was really tough. How was it for you?" Norris: "I was catching you!"
Anybody else feeling really cheated today? I know they couldn't race in that realistically, but why couldn't it dry up for a bit? Gutted.
Maybe this race adds to the 'Sprint Race' arguments? i.e. with a sprint race at least we would have had some racing over the weekend?
