Jones has been quoted in an interview this week saying he hopes to get 95% of his signings in by the end of June. Wishful thinking or hopefully he has got the backing of the Yanks.
It's nothing more than basic management competence. Something that has been missing from Charlton since the days of Lee Bowyer. I am not confident at all however that NJ will be allowed to do it. 95% by the way implies at least 20 players coming in! That doesn't seem likely. Perhaps mathematics is not Jones' strong suit.
During last summer or this season Charlton have signed a lot of new players. 27 had their debut season here - though some of those will have been academy youngsters or loanees. It will be a minor miracle if we have not broken some FFP rules. Particularly bearing in mind we don't sell many season tickets. I don't know if that will catch up with us during the 2024-25 season, but ay some point feel we may be in trouble with the EFL. Particularly if there is another Summer rebuild. I know we will shed a lot of dead wood again (hopefully), but it is not as simple as that. How many ST's will the Club sell by August - more or fewer than last season? I cannot see it being more. How then will the Club afford to give Nathan Jones some of the new players he will want? I can't think of a way, aside from selling the likes of Alfie May and Leaburn. And if it wasn't for May's goals Charlton would certainly be playing League Two football next season.
Unless the owners have finally cottoned on to the fact that you have to spend plenty of money to get out of L1 and have been putting in non-refundable donations. That would make a mockery of SE7 partners’ initial strategy, but we have no way of knowing if they have done that or not. We still don’t fully understand who ‘they’ are or what the process would be to allow that to happen.
We need 2 quality midfielders. Dobbo gone, Coventry ineffective, if we don't seriously strengthen here we're doomed to carry on as a long-ball team, which is what we are now for most of the time. Our defensive problems have been well documented but the midfield is key for me.
The Charlton Tradition at this time of year is that we all wait with baited breath for our new signings. Then another month passes.....then another....etc etc. Then when the preseason is nearly finished we get the slow influx of freebies, loanees and rejects. Then a couple of months later we sack the manager. NJ said he "hoped" to get 95% in by the end of June. I'd rather he said "Expected".
If the transfers do not go to plan I can see fireworks behind the scenes. I'll be surprised if this happens as certain Jones had assurances. Jones is not a Holden or Appleton who'll suffer s***.
