When I posted in the Harry Kane thread earlier DH suggested that H is now probably the best player he has ever seen in a Spurs shirt. I am not going to argue with that statement. He is certainly the best ‘centre forward’ that I have seen. I am just too young to have seen Greavsie, so Martin Chivers was my go to CF in my youth and he remains a player that I have a lot of time for. We have seen many excellent forwards at our club, in some sort of chronology from the 80s to now Archibald, Allen, Lineker, Sheringham, Klinnsman, Ferdinand; Keane, Berbatov, Defoe, Crouch and now Kane, with Harry at the top of the tree. But having thought just about strikers I started to consider who compares to him in other positions, DH mentioned Modric and I would throw Bale, Hoddle, Waddle and Gazza into the mix. And from there I have thought about picking a 25 man Tottenham ‘squad’ from the 50 years that I have been watching. 3 x GK, 9 defenders, 9 midfield, 4 Forwards GK – Jennings, Clemence, Lloris DF – Walker, Perryman, Hughton, Knowles, King, Mabbutt, Vertonghen, Alderwiereld, Roberts MF – Hoddle, Ardiles, Gascoigne, Modric, Eriksen, Anderton, Waddle, Dembele, Son ST – Kane, Bale, Sheringham, Berbatov Lots of room for debate I am sure, but currently I would rather look back, because looking forward is filling me with dread!
And no place for Ginola, Klinsmann, Clive Allen, van der Vaart…to name but four. Spurs have had some good players. Just not necessarily all at the same time!
Great thread! Glad I could be of unintended inspiration Had to go 3, 9, 8, 5 though instead of 3, 9, 9, 4, as those five strikers were just too good to drop any one of them. From my time of watching Spurs I'd go with: Lloris Robinson Friedel Walker, Woodgate, King, Ekotto Corluka, Toby, Jan, Rose Dawson Bale, Modric, Dembele, Son Lennon, Eriksen, van der Vaart, Ginola Kane, Berbatov Defoe, Sheringham Keane It's fair to say I've gone a bit Dutch total football though with no defensive midfielder . Midfield was very tough to pick... Carrick, Davids, Huddlestone, Parker, Sandro and Wanyama all missing out feels crazy!
Nice thread CM, a much needed break from us endlessly debating the state of affairs at the club. Counting players I'm old enough to properly remember, I'd go with: Lloris, Robinson, Friedel Charlie, Carr, King, Dawson, Jan, Toby, Ziege, Benny Bale, Modric, Dembele, Anderton, VDV, Ginola, Eriksen, Sandro, Wanyama Kane, Keane, Berbatov, Sheringham, Defoe
I`ve been supporting Spurs since the early 80`s. Clemence, Lloris, Robinson Perryman, Walker, King, Roberts, Vertonghen, Mabbutt, Hughton, Rose Ginola, Waddle, Hoddle, Ardiles, Gascoigne, Dembele, Modric, Eriksen, Anderton Kane, Klinsmann, Lineker, Son Heung Min, Berbatov, Bale
GKs: Lloris, Robinson, Thorstvedt FBs: Walker, Carr, Assou-Ekotto, Ziege CBs: King, Vertonghen, Dawson, Alderweireld DMs: Sandro, Davids CMs: Modric, Dembele Wingers: Lennon, Bale, Son, Ginola AMs: van der Vaart, Eriksen Forwards: Kane, Sheringham, Keane, Klinsmann
My first live match was 1968 GK – Jennings, Thorstvedt, Lloris DF – Walker, Perryman, Carr, Ziege, King, Mabbutt, Vertonghen, Alderwiereld, Roberts MF – Hoddle, Ardiles, Gascoigne, Modric, Eriksen, Bale, Van der Vaart, Dembele, Son ST – Kane, Greaves, Lineker, Berbatov
For my squad Jennings, Clemence, Lloris Walker, Perryman Knowles,Gough,King,England Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Hughton Bale,Modric, Ardiles, Hoddle ,Gascoigne, Mackay ,Blanchflower (capt) ,Peters Greaves,Kane ,Berbatov ,Klinsmann Gilzean Alfie Conn missed the cut
Jennings, Clemence, Lloris Walker, Perryman, Knowles, King, England, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Benny Bale, Modric, Ardiles, Hoddle, Gascoigne, Mackay, Peters, Waddle Greaves, Kane, Berbatov, Keane, Gilzean, Ginola And still not finding room for Eriksen, Son, VDV, Chivers, Carrick, or Archibald Edit: or Lineker
Surprised so few are picking Lineker. Interesting to see if one of our 1960s fans will pick John White.
I only vaguely remember him , I could have included the whole double team and the likes of Mullery Chivers Crooks,Archibald , Sheringham Defoe, Keano Waddle and Sick note For some reason Lineker never clicked with me as a Spurs legend while I have great fondness for Bennie ,Sandro, Conn, Armstrong ( Gerry and Chris )
Thorstvedt, Lloris, Robinson Carr, Kyle Walker, Chimbomba, Vert, Toby, Mabbut, King, Naybet, Benny Dembele, Modric, Gazza, Fox, Leonhardsen, Bale, Hoddle, VDV, Son Kane, Klinsmann, Keane, Defoe
I am still thinking about my team, I am trying to get a squad that would go well in the 2120’s, but John White will definitely be there.
