Given the slight delay on the new player front, I thought you may want to cast your minds back to when signings didn't seem to have an invisible line to cross before they could pull on a black and white strip.

    Two categories to this thread of musing;

    1. Who, in your opinion, was the most exciting purchase NUFC have made, ever. Either the player, the excitement caused or the effect the player had on the team.

    2. Who was the best pound for pound purchase NUFC ever made.

For me, the most exciting was Keegan (first time round as a player). At the time no-one would ever have thought we would have acquired a player of his standing given the standing in the game we had at that time. His coming to NUFC just electrified the city, the fans and the Club.

The best pound for pound player has to be the one and only Alan Shearer. His effect on the team, the number of goals he scored and the time he stayed I honestly can't think of any other player who repaid his fee back as much as he did.

Signing Shearer will go down as the most electrifying signing but for me the best pound for pound signing was easily Rob Lee!

The best signing ever was perhaps Keegan and the most valued signing would have been Rob Lee for sure.

Best pound for pound signing should have been either Dyer or Bellamy. Both would have been sold for 20m plus if Dyer didn't have his injuries and if Souness didn't alienate Bellamy to the point that everyone knew we wanted rid.

EDIT: Is Robson never got sacked then neither would have been sold and I think we'd have probably won a trophy.

Shearer I agree with and Peter Beardsley must also be in the frame.

Has to be Shearer x2 for me.
£15m was cheap for the goals he delivered.
His goals basically meant we dined at the top table for so long.

Beardsley the second time was an amazing piece of business for the goals he scored and made for Coley and latterly Shearer.

In my time following the club:

Shearer for excitement. World record fee, the best striker around and a local lad. What a great day it was when I heard the news that he was signing.

Rob Lee for VFM. What a player and signed for only £700k.

600k for Kevin Philips best pound for pound signing their ever was considering he's the only English player to ever win the European Golden Boot. Who wouldn't appreciate a bargain like that?

Best signing I think I've ever seen is probably Don Hutchinson. A real classy player.

Would anyone disagree Erik Lamela is the worst pound for pound signing in history?

    1. Mirandinha - The excitement was ridiculous. Maybe it was living in my neck of the woods for a while which made it seem all the more big time. Shearer was obviously massive. We were treated some big ones with Albert, Ginola, Asprillia - all came with huge continental experience but Shearer just felt the icing and the cherry.

    2. I think Rob Lee is difficult to beat. Brian Kilcline was another outstanding piece of business. Exactly what we miss now. A leader at the back. David Kelly and Gavin Peacock too.

I think Lamela may still come good. He has plenty of talent. He struggled badly but I think he might do ok. I don't think he'll ever live up to that price tag though!

I tell you who might have been in amongst the value signings but for injuries - Malcolm Allen. 500K was a masterstroke at the time. He was a very underrated player, KK had a knack of getting the most from players like that.

Soldado was pretty embarrassing as well. Time will tell as to how much money they get back on either. At least on Boumsong we somehow rescued about £5m.

Boum was easily overshadowed by Marcelino and his finger anyway
