A long term replacement for King perhaps?

One for the future then. I didn't know that we could make signings outside of the transfer window.

It's a loan deal - aren't the rules for that different?

Loans are ok I think, and players from other leagues around the world. I think that's the case. If not someone will put me right.

I suspect this is a 'non-playing loan' as far as Prem football goes this season.

My understanding is that it's all about preparing him to play next season, that if he impresses in trials he will then sign permanently.

Sounds like we're just getting a closer look at him, see how he takes to life here and within the setup at Spurs. Obviously looking at options for maybe 2 years time. Gallas and King will need replacing and better to bed in a player now at minimal cost. If it works out then good, if not then not much money wasted and we can go out and buy one. Caulker, Kaboom, Dawson and A N Other for the start of the 2013-14 season......

The South American window is open at different times, due to the various seasons starting in late January and finishing in October - however, so there isn't an unfair advantage, players signed by European-based teams are able to sign players in the window, but not play them until the next European window opens (which was the case with Sandro, who was signed in mid-March)

As a few posters have already said, it's a loan where he'll be training with the squad and generally acclimatising for the next three months, then the deal will become permanent once the summer window opens.

I think that the timing here is very sensible.
How often do you see a player from another continent join a squad and struggle miserably for months, while they try to adjust on a variety of different levels?
This allows him time to learn the language, adjust to the climate, settle in to his new home and get used to a new routine, without the pressure of having to perform in the team.
He'll get time in reserve games and possibly friendlies, too.

Sandro had an intelligent approach to joining up, learning the language before he joined and preparing himself for a totally different experience.
Hopefully he'll be able to pass on some tips to Uvini.

Cheers HBIC. - initially, I didn't realise he was just a loan signing who'd only be training. PNP's right, the timing on this is great. fingers crossed he'll be a decent player; i'm sure sandro will have been consulted about him.

How does he qualify for a work permit?
I though he had to be an established international....
