Two questions for everyone: Approximately how many away grounds have you watched Charlton at ? How many away teams that you have visited to watch Charlton have moved stadiums, meaning a new visit is required? Its not a contest - just interested to hear other folks experiences. Memo to @baraettmattesvensson - Charlton games only
Here is mine. Away grounds watched Charlton at - approx. 60 [doubt I will make the 92, but would like to] Away teams visited that need a re-visit, as they have moved since: Coventry [Highfield Road] Middlesboro [Ayrsome Park] Reading [Elm Park] Brighton [Goldstone Ground, have been to Amex too] Southampton [the Dell] Man City [Maine Road] Millwall [The Den] Hull [Boothferry Court?] Wimbledon [Plough Lane] Have also done Grimsby, Hereford, Maidstone, Lincoln, Barnet and Tranmere - all gone out of the league I think Derby - Baseball Ground Leicester - Filbert St Bristol Rovers - Memorial Ground Northampton - Meccano Stadium Arsenal - Highbury West Ham - Upton Park
I used to do the away games about 30/40 years ago when I was single. there was a group of us who took turns to drive, since the real ale was at least as important as the football. I was pretty pissed a lot of the time so can't give an accurate number, probably about 20-odd grounds, and in the late Andy Nelson era the football was so bad I pitied the sober fans who were only there for the football. The farthest was Molyneux in the firm's lorry, where we lost 3-0. Some favourites- Kenilworth Rd- Greene King Abbotts. Bristol Rovers- Brakspears Swindon- Wadworth's 6X Southampton and Portsmouth- Gales' Ales Gillingham Shepherd Neame Maidstone-.....".... Stevenage - Abbott's Watford and Barnet - McMullen's Wolverhampton- Banks' Mild.
I have seen us in Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Spain and Belgium, coupled with seeing us play on about 130 different grounds. In total I have amassed about 450 different grounds worldwide.
As you well know I am older than Seb so I am certain I have amassed more grounds, Cheesewright probably not.
Oh i saw you play at selhurst park before it was your home and st andrews......But lets not tslk about it
Must be around 40-50. Went to nearly every ground through the premiership years and hell of a lot from champs and league one (previous spell). I used to keep ticket stubs from new grounds visited, and imagine they're knocking around at the house somewhere. On top of that I've done most of the big stadiums in Europe too. A shame it's unlikely I'll see charlton play at one in my lifetime.
I saw Syd on Saturday bless him, think he is down to 2 teeth now. Good fan to be fair. You will be his natural successor @baraettmattesvensson
You lot are way way older than I am, so I'm already at a disadvantage. I've got about 39 away stadiums done, been looking through my Facebook profile to validate it.
Worst away ground to travel to by public transport: Oxford United [Kassam Stadium] - it must be easier to reach Aleppo. Dagenham and Redbridge by tube on a very hot summer's night wasn't great, either.
Think some of my favourite ones: Withdean when the fans were "chanting Robbie who scored?" Elliot turns around and shouts really really loud "think it was Burton" Sheffield United, easy to get to and cheap travel there (some really good pubs around) Hated Sheffield Wednesday... You got to get a 35 minute tram journey there. The clubs not even in Sheffield, ergo, only one team in Sheffield.
One of the worst grounds was Ayresome Park. The natives were not friendly and I got a clump when I came out of the ground. The most scared I have been at a game was at the Old den in the seventies.
My one trip to Ayresome Park was for a game on Christmas Eve ! Can you imagine that happening today ? Got the train up there - I remember the stewards being glorified thugs who were more intimidating than the Boro fans. Walking through Boro to the ground was a bit like sight seeing in Raqqa. We drew 0-0 in the snow that day, the late Tommy Caton played for us in our all yellow away kit of the time.
