Promised myself I wouldn't go OTT over Xmas but still came out of it putting on a few pounds. Didn't help that the weather was ****e and I couldn't really out for surfing or cycling.

Anyway, the antidote : Cut out the bread. Cut down on the saturated fat. So replace Sausages, Bacon, Butter, Cheese etc, with Potatoes, Salmon, Tuna, Broccoli, Carrots etc. Absolutely no crisps, cake, etc. Portion control, I'm a sucker for making a healthy tasty meal, and then going back for 2nds .... 3rds ....

Exercise : Cycle 10 miles offroad 2-3 times per week. Surf, whenever it's on. The Golf club near me have just build a new swimming pool and gym, so I'll get membership for the pool through the cold months and swim 3-4 times per week, probably 1/2 mile at a time.

Good to hear that you're going skiing @Chief. It's ****ing hard work, but you'll burn loads of calories. <ok>

Unfortunately, alcohol, especially beer and wine contains huge amounts of carbs and calories.

If you’re not gonna at least cut way back, you need to work your ass off to burn that.

Rowing chews up calories as fast as anything. So hit the Concept 2!

    Taking the van!

It's all evolved today, the people who came round last night are the people who we were going with next year and I said **** it, we'll go this year.

Closer investigation and there are two camping sites, both in the same quarter as we'd have been staying anyway.

Will be taking my bike down to where I work in the week and getting use out of that and I'm also going pescatarina in the week, although I've said I'll eat whatever she prepares at the weekend. I did request it be generally chicken based though.

How many calories are you burning on the rowing machine per hour ? I've got an app for my phone which tells me I'm burning around 700 calories per hour offroad mountain biking. I can't stand the Gym to be honest, I find it boring and would much rather be outside. But the weather doesn't always allow in Blighty !

Ratcheting up the incline on a treadmill may work better than the rowing machine.

Less physical stress on the joints (for those of a certain age like me), improves cardio and burns the calories off!

Depends on how you set the machine and how much you put into it, of course. But nothing makes the whole body work like rowing.

I’d imagine it’s the same with biking. You get out what you put into it.

Where are you going fella ?

My missus is vegetarian, so we tend tend to cook veggie evening meals anyway. She does eat fish as well (so I guess that makes her pesc too) We've got access to great fresh fish straight off the boat, so it would be madness not to really. I just need to be strict when it comes to the ultimate weakness, a bacon bap with lashings of butter .....

I don’t have any problems there and I’m no spring chicken. But, yeah, everybody’s different.

If you have a back problem, for instance, rowing won’t suit you.

Yeah, I push myself on the bike. There are moments where that little voice is saying 'have a rest, this is too much' (usually on steep uneven climbs) but I have a little sticker on my bike that I can see when my head is down and I'm giving it every last drop. It's of Mr T saying 'Keep peddling Fool !' and I'm scared he'll judge me if I stop <laugh>
