I used to wonder why very wealthy individuals stood for office as they didn't need the money. Was it the "power" over others? I think now we can see why with the chumocracy in full effect. Self interest and vicariously channeling "hard working families" tax contributions to their pals in return for a seat on the board of their companies when they retire from public life. "Benefit fraud" on an industrial scale.

Labour MP In Court Over £63,000 Housing Benefits

Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, is accused of Over £63,000 Housing Benefits
    • A Labour MP has appeared in court accused of defrauding her local council to receive social housing worth over £63,000.

Apsana Begum, 29, is accused of failing to tell Tower Hamlets that she was "no longer living in overcrowded conditions".

Ms Begum was elected to her seat in Poplar and Limehouse in east London last year.

At Westminster Magistrates' Court today, she denied three counts of fraud by dishonestly failing to disclose information to make a gain for herself or another, or cause or expose other to a loss.

Wearing a black hijab, she spoke only to give her name and to respond to the charges: "I plead not guilty".

Deputy senior district judge Tan Ikram approved an application to prevent her address from being read out in open court after hearing she is the subject of a "campaign of harassment" by members of her own party.
He said: "The application is on the basis firstly that Miss Begum is a Member of Parliament for Poplar and Limehouse and since the murder of Jo Cox, MP's are advised to take higher regard to their security and is not usually safe practice to reveal details of home addresses.

"Secondly there's issues with members of the Labour Party."

Raj Chada, defending, said: "The individual referred to in the email is also a member of the Labour Party and their supporters have started a campaign of harassment against Miss Begum."

The prosecutor for Tower Hamlets did not object to the application and it was granted.

Judge Ikram said: "I think she's sufficiently identified for the purposes of the press because she's a Member of Parliament, there's not going to be confusion over who she is."

According to the charges, Ms Begum applied on July 22nd, 2011 to the Tower Hamlets housing list.

Prosecutor David Wong said: "The reasons for the application was that she was in over-crowded accommodation. Subsequently, on the dates mentioned, she moved out to a different address that which appears in charges two and three. She then ceased to be overcrowded.

"She did not notify housing services.

"The value is in the sum of £63,928.63 which we calculated as the cost to the local authority of having to house someone else on the housing list elsewhere."

Under the first count she is accused of "dishonestly failing to disclose to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, information which you were under a legal duty to disclose to them, namely that you were no longer living in overcrowded conditions" in Poplar, Tower Hamlets between January 1st, 2013 and May 21st, 2013.

Under the second she is accused of failing to inform Tower Hamlets housing that she had moved to a property in Spitalfields, east London, between May 21st, 2013 and March 23rd, 2014.

The last charge accuses her of not informing Tower Hamlets housing between the dates October 28th, 2015 and March 31st, 2016, that the Spitalfields address was not overcrowded between May 2013 and October 2015.

The case was deemed too serious to be dealt with by magistrates and was sent to the crown court for trial.

Begum was given unconditional bail and will next appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Jan 5th

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson bailed in fraud investigation | UK news | The Guardian

Police are investigating possible financial irregularities at a north-east England council.

Northumbria Police said "concerns of a financial nature" were raised by South Tyneside Council. The force declined to say when the probe started and whether it focused on an individual or department.

The council is supporting the investigation, its spokesman said.

Mr Malcolm is also standing down as a councillor in his South Shields ward and has left the Labour Party.

Labour do love a good fraud as much as anybody else.

These have both happened within the last 4 or 5 month.

Labour more than most, coz they don’t know how to cover things up properly like the Tories!!

I know a retired former Labour MP personally.
Great Bloke but even he admits his nose was continually in the trough. His excuse, “we aren’t paid enough”, and he was a Junior Minister.
