This deal in itself doesn't seem a bad one, but the fact he is understudy to McCarthy is really poor. McCarthy is not good enough. Not for the premier league and certainly not if we want to be aiming for 10th. So buying a youngster to compete and eventually replace him is not going to help us with our goals. I have never seen the lad play in fairness, but from what I know he is not ready for the prem yet. Was really hoping McCarthy and Fraser would both be off and we would bring in a top quality starter and a cheap back up.
He isn't an understudy. He's going to be competing for the gloves from day 1. Ralph chucked Tino straight in, I don't see why he won't do the same with Bazunu if he impresses in preseason.
At 20 He is Irelands first choice GK so already has decent pedigree.. and from all accounts was Pompeys best player by far last season. He will be starting in goal for Saints next season. Save this comment.
Fair enough, but if Tino wasn't ready it didn't matter, we had KWP. We already know McCarthy is pretty crap. So if Bazunu isn't ready for the premier league yet, which chances are he won't be as very few 20 yr old keepers are, then we have another season dropping points due to a crap keeper.
McCarthy may start as first choice. But Bazunu is clearly a good keeper already and will be pretty motivated to play well.
Also another thing to note here is that we can still loan someone from Man City as this is a permanent signing.
McCarthy isn't terrible. He's a decent shot stopper at the end of the day. He does give me a severe dose of the ****s when he has the ball at his feet though! Hopefully Bazunu will be ready for PL football, but if Ralph goes with Alex in the short term, I can live with it.
Some comments from Blue Moon forum: A waste on our end if this happens. Big future A fee that low must include a buyback clause. i'd be amazed if this doesn't include a buyback tbh. we sold them angus gunn for a better price ffs! In other words, City fans rate him.
This is a very good signing. Seen a lot of him in action. Like all young keepers was prone to a couple of head in hands errors last season BUT countless times kept Portsmouth in games. This guy has a very very high ceiling.
I have a mate who’s a Pompey fan (don’t judge) and he says he’s very triggered that Bazunu is going to be wearing a Saints shirt. He’s been raving about him and said it was very obvious that he was way above their level. I’ll take that for now.
Never seen him before, no idea how good he is. All I ask is that he's better than McCarthy. Because if he's not, then (a) we've been here before with Gunn, (b) we could have just kept Fraser, and (c) we're in for a long season. But if he is better, then brilliant.
