Coventry become fifth club in Premier League era (since 1992-93) to fall from PL to the 4th tier after Swindon, Bradford, Pompey, Blackpool.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but before their first relegation weren't they the longest serving top flight club after Arsenal and Everton? These other clubs to fall from grace were something of yo-yos or had experienced unprecedented success, but Cov are on a different scale.
They had a charmed life of 34 years in Div 1, never an interesting team even when they won the cup. Must have been well run behind the scenes. What goes around comes around though.
Brighton now on 89 points, 12 points ahead of third (Huddersfield, who have a game in hand), promotion just a whisker away.
Don't like Brighton but I'm pleased for hughton decent fella. Just read somewhere that only 4 of the last fifteen clubs relegated from the PL get back up the first time. Factamundo
I hope they go up. Remember having a good drink and a chat with Brighton fans in Malt Shovel when we were both going through bad times. One of their number regularly used to go on CI when any fans could use it and was very supportive of us. Had many a good chat with him. Went on their site to wish them all the best when they finally moved into their new ground but was informed he had sadly passed away and never got to see it.
If we stay up, could the Premier League be persuaded (when there are Saturday/ Tuesday fixtures) to have aways v Bournemouth and Southampton together and Brighton and Chelsea another time... of course we might yet be throwing Fulham into the mix.
They were the only club to play in all levels including Div 3 North and Div 3 South. Now will they be the only one to have played in all those, plus PL, Championship, League One and League Two.
About 20 years ago us, Swansea and them were in Numpty Corner for about 3 seasons at the bottom of league 2. Well take a look at us now! Decent club back then, I fear they may have become very effete and rah rah now. Football Focus will love them, the Lanes, their proximity to London etc
Always found them utterly uninspiring, they couldn't rouse anything within me. Not been to their new ground, but have been to Highfield Rd. Wouldn't want them to expire, but I'm totally indifferent to whether they return or not.
Without googling it how many of the Coventry cup final team could you name? I'll go for Ogrizovich( spelling??) Grielish, Adams, Houchin, Bennett, Quinn and that's my lot, half of them are probably wrong. Blonde centre half; Halford was it? Kilkenny? Time to find out.
Doesn't hairy handed Richard Keys support Cov? Sure I remember him swanning round on Cup Final Day in a rosette.
