If we play as we did on Sunday we should create enough chances to win, but will we take those chances? It's probably too soon for Innis to start another game, so Famewo will slot in seamlessly, otherwise probably no change. Lee is due a goal, and I think he'll get it tonight. It would be nice if Burstow could get his first league goal too.
Not sure how I feel about tonight. I don’t think we have a chance of promotion as we are too far behind and also because I just don’t think we have a good enough team. If we go on a run and just miss out on the playoffs again, then there is a danger that TS will do what he did last year and, thinking that we are nearly good enough, just provide minimum investment. What I actually think we need is a big investment and better quality players in a number of positions. That won’t come cheap but it is what is needed in order to go for automatic promotion, which should be our aim. The playoffs are always a lottery and the best team doesn’t always win. So maybe medium term we would be better off struggling along mid table so that it’s obvious that we need that major investment. Can’t make a prediction until I’ve seen the team, but strangely the result seems unimportant right now. Quite frankly I’d prefer it if we won the Papa Johns rather than finish 8th or 9th in the league.
TEAM NEWS | Famewo and Washington start Crewe clash 12th January 2022 18:45pm please log in to view this image Akin Famewo and Conor Washington both start tonight’s Sky Bet League One encounter against Crewe Alexandra at the Mornflake Stadium (7.45pm) as Johnnie Jackson makes two changes. Famewo replaces Ryan Inniss, who is named among the Addicks’ substitutes bench, while Conor Washington returns to lead the Charlton line having shaken off a minor hamstring niggle. Stephen Henderson remains in goal for his first league start of the season, as Craig MacGillivray has made the journey back down south with his wife having gone into labour. The returning Famewo will operate alongside Sean Clare and skipper Jason Pearce in Jackson’s back-three, with Diallang Jaiyesimi and Ben Purrington continuing in wing-back roles. Alex Gilbey, George Dobson and Elliot Lee man an unchanged midfield, behind a front two of Jonathan Leko and Washington. Inniss is joined on the bench by Nathan Harness, Adam Matthews, Ben Watson, Albie Morgan, Corey Blackett-Taylor and Mason Burstow. Commenting on MacGillivray’s absence, Jackson told CharltonTV: “Macca travelled up with us but he had to shoot off last night because his wife has gone into labour. Obviously some things are more important than football; he needs to be there for the birth so we wish him and his wife all of the best with that. No news as of yet with regards to the baby but we’re watching that closely. “I had no qualms about putting Hendo in,” the boss added. “He did great again on Sunday.” Meanwhile, Jackson was delighted to welcome Washington back into his starting XI, though admitted the Northern Ireland international’s minutes will be managed with Saturday’s trip to Cheltenham Town in mind. “Obviously we’re going to have to manage that situation carefully tonight,” he said. “We don’t want to risk him and lose him for a longer period. We miss him when he’s not there so we’re really pleased that he’s available for this evening. We have to see how long he can play tonight with one eye on Saturday as well.” Charlton: Henderson; Clare, earce (c), Famewo; Jaiyesimi, Gilbey, Dobson, Lee, Purrington; Leko, Washington Subs: Harness, Matthews, Inniss, Watson, Morgan, Blackett-Taylor, Burstow
That team should be more than good enough against Crewe. And I’m happy that Henderson is getting more minutes - he’s reliable and an honest pro. Anything less than a two goal advantage would be disappointing.
I largely agree Although it might be said that players might join a team just outside the play offs who finish strongly, over a team that limps into 14th. But then I’m forgetting the magical summer of 2011 and the cold hard fact that players are more motivated by cold hard cash.
Boo boy ova ere… I’m not counting on anything with this team. We are fairly solid but we find it very hard to score goals. I think it will be close either way.
1-0 Crewe. We need to start thinking about a rebuild for next season. We’re nowhere near good enough.
Leko has been absolutely ****e - it’s been like 10 v 12 the amount of times he’s given Crewe the ball
I was thinking the same. I’d send him back tbh. He brings nothing to the team. Doesn’t score, doesn’t get assists, doesn’t pass.
What is the matter with them? Where did all that momentum go? The results they got against really decent teams in this league. Was that just JJ's honeymoon after all? Gutted. Disillusioned. Fed the f**k up.
First 30 minutes we looked good and then it’s just slipped away - leaving Leko on the pitch has cost us, it’s like playing with 10 men
