Looks like England are going to be totally under prepared for the 1st test......... hardly any red ball cricket played since the 4th Test against India in August...... Just hope the Aussies are also under prepared.........
Haven’t missed an Ashes Boxing Day since I got here - first one was ‘99. That was a fizzed, day completely rained off, didn’t get home til 7.30pm though - quite squiffy - and used my tickets for the 3rd day. All over on the fourth day after Steve Waugh took the extra hour chasing 33 runs with 6 wickets. Great cricket. Mixed bag since, but Aussies all out for 98 midway through second session and England closing the day at 157-0 was a treat. Think that was 2010. Warnie’s 700th wicket in 2006 Warner caught out on 99 off a no ball in 2017… my wife went ballistic (she doesn’t like Warner). think you are right sb, always a great day regardless. Will be in the members, on the 4th level, usually at 1st or 2nd slip to the lefthanders.
We’ve had our first day of sunshine for some time but with that, take a look at this massive thunderstorm/ large hail image about to hit us. Moving in from the south west…… The yellow, orange, red is real bad but the brown / black is frightening stuff. Hail the size of tennis balls and so on. Cricket isn’t centre stage at present, the weather is. Shocking stuff, Richie.
Had to post it as its history. Ajaz Patel becomes only the 3rd player in Test history to take all 10 wickets in an innings after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. Amazing considering he did it on days 1 and 2 of the test. Equally Amazing is that Mayank scored 150 opening the batting , crazy stuff. The Kiwi's keep providing some memorable moments !
Being such decent hosts, l think we may have overstepped our welcoming by making the Poms feel like they’re at home with all this wet weather. I can now understand why so many choose to move over here on a permanent basis! Hope we haven’t gone all wokey as well. I have little time for the Bleeding Heart Society. As l mentioned early, just hope two great countries/ teams get the opportunity to display their strengths and we fans enjoy a great series, with no weather intrusions.
Australia name their side for the opening test, quite surprised that Marsh isn't in it after his World Cup exploits. I'm quite glad he isn't actually.
Fair enough if there are gonna be 2 day/night tests, still a big call to leave out your spearhead in the opener though. Whether we play 4 seamers or 3 and 1 spinner will depend on whether Stokes can bowl a full quota of overs. Is Leach up to the task of bowling out the Aussies in the 2nd innings and not conceding a bucketful in the first ? Mmm
Anderson out of first Ashes Test, saved for the pink ball please log in to view this image By Daniel Brettig Updated December 7, 2021 — 5.49pmfirst published at 10.18am Save Share Normal text sizeLarger text sizeVery large text size Joe Root’s touring team rather than a genuine injury scare, with a second pink ball Test now added to the schedule in place of what would have been a red ball game in Perth. There had always been some queries over whether Anderson would play the first Test in Brisbane, as it was never likely that at 39 he would be asked to take part in all five matches of the series. please log in to view this image James Anderson, left, is being saved for the second Ashes Test. Stuart Broad may also miss the Gabba.CREDIT:GETTY “Jimmy is fit, he’s been bowling for a while, he bowled well in the nets yesterday, and he’s bowling again today, [and] had a few spells in the truncated warm-up game,” Buttler said. “So [it’s] just a precautionary measure with an incredibly long series ahead, I think the guys are just playing it a little bit safe. So, he looks good to me.” While Buttler said he had been unaware that the fifth Test was now guaranteed to be a day-night affair, England’s planners will have factored in the chance to throw a pink ball to Anderson on two occasions rather than one. That the final Test of the series has been moved out of Western Australia and will now be played in prime time in the eastern states – Hobart, Melbourne or Sydney – forced England to rethink how they use Anderson across the five matches.
Surely you play your strongest team in the first match and try to get off to as good a start as possible, then look at resting a player? Seems a bit cock-eyed to me.
We don’t win much at the Gabba mate. 55 tests, we’ve won 9, they’ve got 33. It’s going to be hot, humid and thundery. We’ll be delighted to lose a couple of days to rain and sneak a draw. No point exhausting old Jimmy in these circumstances. Plus just heard that Anderson has a ‘slight calf strain’.
Agreed, first test to be a draw. Better off resting the player who can make a difference during the series. I know l would.
A draw at the Gabba will feel like a win for England, usually we are one down at the end of this one.
I should explain …..l tend to think the weather will decide the outcome on this one. First two days probable rain. Don’t think l would want to bat first.
I would but it’s on BT sports & got rid of that as find it boring when I had it, not going subscribe to it again
