How many can you name? (It's easy to look up the answers - so don't!) I'll post the answers sometime tomorrow. 1. Current Championship manager who played in midfield v Portugal in 2002 Lee Bowyer 2. Keeper whose only cap was one week before he won the European Cup Alex Stepney 3. Name the three current Burnley players capped once Pope, Cork, Rodriguez 4. Current Rangers defender capped once in 2014 Jon Flanagan 5. One of three brothers who all played together for the same club who scored v Egypt in his only game in 1980s Danny Wallace 6. Double European Cup winner whose only cap came as an Arsenal player in 1976 Jimmy Rimmer 7. Half back who scored in his only game v Portugal in 1951 and who won something as a manager! Sir William Nicholson 8. Brighton striker who played once in 1980 - for a total of six minutes. The team he joined that year won the European Cup three days before he was capped! Peter Ward 9. Name the three players to win their only caps so far last season Cholobah, Dunk, McCarthy 10. Now a regular TV celebrity who was given his only cap by his former club manager in 1994 when playing for Liverpool Neil " Razor" Ruddock
Harry Clarke. George Robb (picked v Hungary when Tom Finney couldn't play...and partially blamed for England 3 v Hungary 6. It wasn't his fault. It was an old English team!) . Ron Henry. (Probably blamed for France 5 v England 2!). Bill Nick (scored with his first kick in an England 5 v Portugal 2 win and wasn't picked again!) Harry Clarke was a winner. They never picked him again, either!
please log in to view this image Even getting a cap has changed as have most things in football. Go back to the 50's & 60's and even later and there were far less international games. You were less likely to be picked to play until you had a substantial track record in club football. A single cap in those times represents an achievement whereas in present times even novices get tried out, winning caps in 'friendlys' with experimental teams. This very rarely if ever happened before the modern proliferation of games.
A chunk of recent caps seem to be first and foremost about cap locking players due to other nations registering an interest, for example Hudson-Odoi
Very true, but 95% of the players were English. Now it's what? 30%? If you're English and playing for a top 10-12 PL club, you've got a cap!
Who did Jimmy Rimmer get a 2nd European Cup Winners medal with? 1 with Villa, was he in the United Squad in 68?
