Germany was the first country in the world to implement Daylight Saving Time (DST) or summer time.

The capital city of modern Germany has changed seven times

College is free for everyone (even non-Germans)

    Prostitution is legal.

The government pays for sex for the disabled.

The city of Boon has established roadside vending machines where prostitutes have to buy a ticket to work. Without one, they could get fined or banned by police.

The world’s tallest cathedral is in Ulm.

Several things inextricably linked with our daily lives were invented in Germany, including the x-ray machine (by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895), the pocket watch, clarinet, gummy bears, cuckoo clock, diesel engine, paraffin, automated calculator, aspirin, fluorescent lamp, telephone, Fanta, LCD screen and the pregnancy test.

It’s illegal to run out of fuel on highways.

According to German law, an infant’s gender must be obvious by his or her first name.

German law states that Sundays are a day of rest and silence. Neighbors are expected to keep quiet, and all grocery and other retail stores are closed.

The Christmas tree (Tannenbaum) tradition came from Germany.

In Germany, there is no punishment for a prisoner who tries to escape from jail because Germans believe it’s a basic human instinct to be free.

Germany has the world’s narrowest street in the city of Reutlingen. Called “Spreuerhofstrasse,” the street is approximately one foot wide at the narrowest point, and nearly twenty inches wide at the widest.

The Weihenstephaner Brewery just north of Munich has been operating since 1040, making it the world’s oldest brewery.

Goes without saying. One goal should do it. Who won the bloody war anyway?

Try telling that to relatives of prisoners at Stalag Luft III...

These are great podcasts if you want to learn about the culture and history of the collective of states which codified into modern Germany, explored in fifteen minute chunks, each one focusing around a different building, object or work of art.

Goerte, Gutenberg, Kant, Durer, Luther, Casper David Friedrich, Nick Proschwitz.

It covers all the cultural greats to be honest.

    Worked briefly in the Fatherland.

One of the weirdest things there is their total obedience at pelican or zebra crossings even in the small hours of the morning when the roads are deserted.

They go nuts if you cross even if the road is ****ing empty of traffic

They know what they are doing. You've only got yourself to blame if you get run over by a tank. They tend to move them under the cover of darkness.

Did I mention the officially-sanctioned brothel?

Every girl has a numbered window in an apartment block, and they wave out to the slavering punters below you can see what they look like (head and shoulders upwards) .

No 69 seemed to be a very busy lass.

Must say the whole experience left me with a bitter taste in the mouth

And that's why disabled prostitutes are incredibly wealthy in Germany.

Its not just Germany. I have noticed this in Beverley, particularly the crossing opposite Tesco. I'd barge through and curse at the obedient people there when I was late for meetings. Obviously pre Covid, but it'd never happen in Hull. Does Beverley have a proportionally high Germanic population?

If we get on the front foot to coin a phrase, then the German's are beatable, if we sit back and let them dictate then we are doomed I fear.
