Actually that isn't true, it was a bit of sensationalist journalism. For a 15 minute period during the crazy volatility in the markets the exchange rates happened to hit a point where if the economies GDP was measured at that exact moment France would appear to have the larger economy. Other than that, the UK is still the fifth largest economy in the world.

France is a member of the EU. Its position is superceded by that of the EU.
Therefore for every country above the UK that has peer import pull / export push
(consumers, industries) and is a current EU member, the UK by definition rises one place on said list.

 

They can try, which is what they're threatening to do. Personally, I think it's all part of Sturgeon's plan to get another referendum. The more anti-English sentiment she can stir up, the better chance she has of getting it.
