More press on this. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...-each-being-paid-up-to-310m-to-join-63prbtbfl https://thefsa.org.uk/news/european-super-league-criticism-mounts-as-further-plans-leaked/ Not surprising as to who are named as the Clubs pushing for this and I would guess from our recent experiences that we could name one or two or five others involved from this country who are in support of such plans. I would hope all fans would oppose such plans even those from the Clubs involved but I come from a generation where Kerry Packer broke the mould in cricket and money talks...in fact it shouts. Can’t see it happening anytime soon but also can’t see it going away so long as mega rich greedy owners exist. For me it would be the beginning of the end for the game I have loved since I can first remember. Money is currently killing football with Society being reflected where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and the divide becoming greater. Obviously the only aim is to guarantee money income and would have to be “tv” backed and is aimed more at the couch potato fan rather than the match going fan. Would anyone on here continue to support Newcastle if we joined the plan? I honestly don’t think I would. I’d go off to support the non league clubs I support and only occasionally have watched in recent years such as Whitley Bay or North Shields. Thoughts.
It would be a no from me too - the final nail in the coffin. The moment promotion and relegation disappear then it's no longer sport and is just business. We're already heading in that direction in the game. To be honest, if the PIF takeover had gone through I would probably have felt the same and lost interest.
It will happen and that will be that.... Funnily enough not much will change for us because its already a hopeless case anyway, but not officially. The only things fans had left was hoping for big takeovers and thats all that's being removed really. The games finished in our eyes, but unfortunately the supporters abroad all follow the big 6 or 8 clubs and that's how it's going to be.... I suspect the grounds of the other tip flight clubs will begin to empty, but they'll just focus on the big 8 tv wise and the wider audience won't give a ****.. They just tune in to see how good they top 8 sides look against clubs like nufc as they do now. What's going to change?
I agree the game has peaked. Tv money income flatlined, other countries aren’t as interested, Middle East is an anomaly because they are all investing so peanuts on football to give exposure and sportswashing is easy for them. TV money will start to flounder and many clubs will go to the wall. A closed shop at the top is likely, it’s when rather than if. The rest will be not much better than local teams having a kickabout, all feeding up into a handful of behemoth clubs in the EFL (European Football League, like NFL). The likes of Newcastle will be little more than a University team.
It won't be successful as FIFA have already said anyone participating in it will not be eligible for World Cups or any Fifa backed tournament. If the money is there a few of the bigger teams will go but die a slow and painful death and the local clubs around them will replace them as the teams to support locally. Football is nothing without the fans and the fans can't and wont travel across Europe to watch constantly - 3 group games and 4/5 more games if you make a final currently is do able but 10 away games in Europe before a knock out stage, who could afford that? From the article that was put out yesterday it seemed like a mini champions League but why would you go to a mini Champions league with 20 teams, split in to 2 divisions so 10 home games, 10 away and then a knock out stage when you get nearly double that in your domestic league in addition to the cups and European games - which you wouldn't be able to participate in if you joined the new European league? Few idiot foreign owners think its the way to go but they'll be in for a sharp shock when it crumbles around them. Good riddance.
That part did but it changed the rest of cricket as a consequence. Also the threat of not playing for country didn’t stop that break away. Money talks. The larger the sum of money the louder it talks.
