We're getting around to that time of the year again, and, as always, we also have a predictions league for this as well. The 3rd Round kicks off on the weekend of 5th/6th of January (though there may be a match on the 4th as well), so plenty of time yet. The scoring system will be the same as last year (because I haven't got the imagination to think of anything else !). Only the semi finals and final are based on tipping the exact result after 90 mins, the others are based on who you think will get through the tie. Tips on the first match between 2 teams cannot then be subsequently changed for a replay. So if you tip eg. Chelsea v Nottm Forest H (Home win) then this means you think Chelsea will get through, and applies also for a replay.

The points for the 3rd round are 10 points for every correct tip eg. Woking v Watford A.

For the fourth round 20 points for every correct tip.

For the 5th round rising to 40 points for every correct tip.

For the quarter finals 80 points for every correct tip.

So we have a maximum of 320 points for every round. Unlike the WPL there are no jokers, no double points for any matches, and all ties count the same.

For the semi finals we have a scoreline based system similar to the WPL. What counts is the scoreline after 90 mins. (normal playing time plus time added on), what happens in extra time is irrelevant for us. So if you tip eg. Watford v Liverpool 2-1 then this has to be the result after normal time.

If you get the exact correct scoreline eg. Watford v Liverpool 2-1, then you get 160 points for it.
If you tip the right result but wrong scoreline, eg. 1-0 as against 2-0 then you get 40 points.
If you tip the right result and right score difference, eg. 2-1 as against 1-0 then you get 80 points. This obviously applies also to drawn games eg. 1-1 as against 0-0 (what happens in extra time doesn't matter).

For the final we have exactly the same principle as for the semis but with increased values:
240 points for the exact scoreline
60 points for the correct result
120 points for the correct result and score difference.

As always it involves a little bit of work printing out 32 fixtures But this gets better over the course of the tournament. So, there we have it. Which teams are going to take the cup seriously ? Which surprise packages will there be ? Are Solihull going to Wembley ? Will the Horns sweep all before them ? The complete 3rd round appears with the next post.

Yorkie, Walsall won the replay, not Sunderland. Also, Fleetwood beat Guiseley - it was the Monday night match after the draw was made.

 

Just a note here to say that the fixture list is being revised constantly. Leicester are away to Newport and not Wrexham. Only 2 replays yet to be decided - those between Solihull and Blackpool, and also Spurs still don't know if they are going to Tranmere or Southport.

 

They are only 30km apart so it doesn't make a lot of difference. They just need to leave London half an hour earlier.

Just a reminder to late tippers that the first match (Tranmere v Spurs) kicks off tomorrow evening. For the first time Lawro (the expert ? from the BBC) will also be in this league. He has actually tipped scorelines, along with a star next to teams he thinks will win with a replay - so I know from that which team he tips to get through to the next round. He has Luton to get through against the Wendies So he is on a completely equal footing with us, tipping exactly the same matches.
