Gerry Byrne, left back for Liverpool in the 60's has died aged 77. A local lad, he spent his entire career playing for the Reds. He played almost the whole of the 1965 cup final, and extra time, with a broken collarbone. Modern footballers take note. RIP
just heard about that... Playing with broken collar bone, ridiculous commitment. Puts modern day injuries into perspective. Must say never heard of him before now but RIP
And the worst thing is that the wages weren't even good at the time. The modern day comparison would be like a McDonalds worker through his shift with a broken collarbone.
Remember him well. Thoughts are with his family Celebrating the cup win, couldn't hold his right arm up - [for the youngsters, that's him with the trophy lid] please log in to view this image
Remember him but never saw him play, I went to my first game at 11 and he had retired the year before. My Dad reckons he was a cracker player, very solid defender. He must have been good because he was in the world cup squad in 1966
Gerry was a great player for us with great commitment and attitude. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP.
Puts into perspective the whole business of being called a 'hard man'. Shanks called him the best professional he ever worked with. Can't top that for a testimony. RIP
Proper legend Gerry, my Aunty Ag used to work in the Fiveways when a lot of those boys bevvied in there, said he was the nicest of the lot. RIP Gerry, you put a lot of today's players to shame. Class act.
