I couldn’t tell you the name of the tour but could find the date off the CD. I lot of years & alcohol have passed since then.
Ed Bicknell used to book groups for Hull University students union in the late 1960s - a very similar list of acts and I think he paid them less than £150.00 per night. The Who concert included a mini stage invasion which ended when Pete Townshend clattered two blokes with his guitar. Some gigs were relocated to The Skyline (Jimi Hendrix cost 12/6d or about 73p in 1967). Ed went on to great things as the manager of Dire Straits and, when they broke up, Mark Knopfler.
Not. Any ladies listed so far so Bow Wow Wow Tina Turner Beyoncé Paloma Faith Tracy Chatman Joan Armatrading Alecia Moore Gwen Stefani
Ladies... Siouxsie played City Hall, Blondie did ice arena once, The Defectors? Vice Squad/Beki Bondage at Tower, Brix Smith at Adelphi, The Favours, Lena Lovitch, did X Ray Spex ever play Hull?
I thought long and hard about The Jam and though I find it hard to believe I didn’t go, I don’t actually remember being there. Anabella was stunning, I waited round the back of The Tower and tried to get her to come to the Welly, but she was having none of it.
OK don't dictate, would have loved to have seen Pauline Murray, I guess they played Welly early on? can we add Jacqui Abbott? and Tracey Thorn, Everything but the girl?
Great thread. Some great bands here listed (as well as some **** ones of course). Have to admit, in awe at some of them too: not going to mention them all but Julie D in '68 and Nico just above this post - amazing. Not going to try and offer my list (not sure I could compile it accurately anyway). But, one of the most meaningful for me, from mine, was Silver Apples. Also, as they’ve not been mentioned yet: Kraftwerk (early 2000s – can’t remember year). My first ever (proper) gig was Morrissey in the 90s.
Dead Kennedys at Leeds Polytechic, circa 1982. Most significant bit was that they were supported by a band called Lord Mountbattens Bits n Pieces. I was a student there at the time, so it wasn't much different to any Wednesday night at Leeds Poly. You'd always find the artists at the local curry house after the gig.
I still see Ted from Lord Mountbatten’s Bits & Pieces from time to time, they split up when lead singer Frenchy got banged up for grave robbing. .
Whatever happened to Frenchy? Son of a Hull University lecturer I believe. Probably a pillar of the Establishment by now.
I seem to remember he moved abroad, though I’m sure I remember him coming back years later, no idea now (I’ll ask Ted next time I see him).
Dropped out of beauty school. Hallucinated about been serenaded by 1950s crooners. Dyed hair pink. It all went horribly wrong.
