My mate got nicked in there back in 1972. And for screwing a lass on one of the benches. Gary will know who I am referring to.
Exactly this. There is so much heritage that could be utilised. It’s just needs one person to get hold of the whole project. Hull is a big City. It has its issues. But then again so does Manchester , Leeds and Birmingham etc. You just need someone with vision to take control. City of Culture was wasted IMHO. But it is never too late.
It is a big City. Hull is a big City and is probably in the Top 20 by most measurements. It needs investment but it needs investment in the right way. It has as much potential as the other Cities I mentioned. It doesn’t have to be as big as those but it is failing in its potential.
The thread is about the development of the strategy of the centre of the town. Not just about the football club. However when we were in the Premier League our City was noticed by so many more people world wide. City of Culture did the same. The City failed to capitalise on either
On that I agree. Only 2 cities had 2 clubs in the rugby league before they had a football league team, Hull and Leeds. Imagine if we only had one club representing the city. Like Sunderland, a similar sized place forv example. Places like that identify with, and feel they are represented by, their football club as do Coventry, Wolverhampton and Derby and other cities of a similar size to Hull
Agreed that the Rugby teams dilute our fan base. Especially nowadays from a financial perspective. There’s only so much you can spend as a family on sport. I just feel that the City of Hull does not do enough to promote itself like other Cities and Towns have realised they need to do. I think we have a great opportunity but are failing to deliver
Not surprising when you had people like Geraghty, voted in time after time, saying City being in the Premier League had not brought a penny into Hull. And that the City Of Culture would give visitors a chance to see Hull was a sporting city, not only does it love rugby league but darts and wrestling, And chance to see how Hull the war damage. Must have pissed themselves in Hamburg, Cologne, Warsaw, Stalingrad and Leningrad over that one.
I think being in the Premier League certainly brought Hull into the limelight of the European World at least. The Councillors of the time failed to capitalise on this, As well as City of Culture. Subsequent parties have failed also. I just think it’s not too late to formulate a proper plan and do justice to what is a great City.
I had visions of City fans at the World Cup telling people in Volgograd and St Petersburg that they were from Hull that we were bombed in the war but were rebuildingl
Talked to a Northern Irish guy last week , done 25 years plus here since uni - asked him what he thought and he said we had a fantastic city , great history and architecture , marina etc . Some of the critics local and otherwise ought to try looking closer and upwards and visit these areas more regularly . It isn’t all about shopping .
Oh I dont know.... some of the parties HCC had and have on the back of funding and COC have I'm sure gone down very well..
