It's a sign of how gutless referees are that defenders foul attackers far more than vice versa in the penalty area yet there are far more free kicks awarded against attackers than penalties against defenders.
By some metrics he's one of the best defenders in the league, but like the rest of our defence he just gets bullied too easily at times. That penalty shout the other night only happened because the striker so easily got round him, Jacob was desperately grabbing and scrambling to recover, and just about did recover to be fair, but the ease with which it became so desperate was really poor. But the most damning thing is the set pieces. We basically never win a header from a set piece in either box.
I remember the days of hard CB's and their tricks, but I'm not sure when it became perfectly ok for a defender to so blatantly wrestle an attacker, be it from a set piece or simply from a ball played forward to an attacker. I know clever attackers (Kane is a great example) back in and have their tricks, but typically it's the CB's wrestling the attacker from behind, hands / arms all over them, yet it's deemed ok. How the hell can it be?
